Where are you buddy? You ok? Worried about you. Haven't seen you on here in a ling time. Hope you're just living large, taking a trip around the world, or something.
?
Thanks for the inquiry. Although I come back to check on the board every now and then, I am backing off of NIU Football for awhile. It will help my general health and sanity.

Because of all the haughty prognostications, I was reallly pumped about what we would see. After the ISU and ND gmes, my bubble was burst and the depression and sickness of seeing the same crap over and over again came back. Like the rest of us, I am heavily invested in NIU, and I take losses very, very hard. I am just tired of the losing and mediocrity. That is why I made the decision to stay away from the bowl games for awhile. It costs money to attend, and I am tired of getting pissed off and embarrassed.

I realize, too, that football is not good for my health. I get very nervous before each game because the games mean and count so much more in FB than in BB, due to the fewer number of FB games. As we have clearly seen in the past, one conference loss can do you in in the MAC. The stress and pressure are too much for me (and my heart) to handle. So, I need to distance myself a little bit.

In addition to this, I do not quite see eye-to-eye with Athletics Administration. I do not like the stagnancy behind the veiled excuse that we have no money. There is so much more that I know can be done. I see them as needing to be more fan-conscious (like Toledo). I have iterated and reiterated my complaints and suggestions here ad nauseum. I realize that it's getting old, and I do not want to get sucked into that complaint vortex again.

I will be back full force next month with basketball. With BB, I know what we've got and I know the expectations: not much. Thus, if we play decently and get a few wins, my expectations will be exceeded. At least I won't get caught up in the pre-season hype and then get dropped to the ground. I am renewing my BB season tix and will be at as many games as possible.

Oh, and by the way, I just had another sex change operation. I had dickectomy and addaboobtome surgery, and am now a vivacious (?) woman again. These changes are taking a toll on my hormones, and it's tough looking at my sexy new body while shaving every morning. Plus, I am not used to seeing a woman in the mirror and get aroused at my own image. (Some of you guys know how this is.) On top of all this, I am re-learning how to go to the bathroom and which bathroom to use. If you see me at Huskie Stadium and I mistakenly straddle the urinal trough, just have pity on me, send me to the women's bathroom, and give me a little peck on the cheek. :tasha:

Urban Meyer?
I surely understand where you're coming from! In fact, I seriously considered doing the same myself. Good luck, and good health to you!

And MileHigh -- who says he's got two?

Maybe he's got three, like that chick in "Total Recall"
DF, you are one of the most respected voices and write some of the most enjoyable threads on this NIU board. distance yourself if it is good for your health, but by no means does your opinion and banter ever get tiring.

I agee, DF is the man, and if he has more than 2 new tits, he is a lot of woman... stay around DF, takes thick skin to care and love the Huskies like we do. Koreck taught me that along time ago....
Best of health to you dogfan. Miss ya around here. I respect your self control, I don't think I could give it up. Regardless, you are still one of the top huskie fans around.

Hope you get/stay healthy.
I dont get it. I expect meritocracy. Dont take it the wrong way. I just realize we will not compete against BCS teams in general. I dont care. I love it. So what we arnt competing for the national championship. I had a great time at UoI and cheered my boys on to the bitter end but left mostly happy. My goal every year is to see us win the MAC. If we dont? Bah! But thats ok. I pity those folks who demand rankings and championships. I LOVE that I can root for a team that might not be the best but doesnt have to be. I think its because I was raised on the Packers circa 1980s. I dunno. I love being a huskies fan, win or lose. I love em.

I agree with you, but when you have expectations that aren't met it gets hard. I don't think DF ever expected us to win the Nat'l Championship game, but he did expect us (like I did) to have a really good year against who we are playing. Wasn't looking like that in the first two weeks. I was pretty upset about it too, how bad we looked.

Mediocre when compared to BCS teams is expected.

Mediocre when it comes to MAC is lame. I still love the Huskies through it, but I gotta see them do well compared to expectations or it gets really frustrating.
Everything so far points towards a generally successful year in the MAC.
I can see where DF is coming from, especially after watching the ND game, even though we won. And I was yelling at the TV quite a bit against Minnesota, even when we were leading. I can see where it can become too much, and I'm sure DF has seen more Huskie football than I have.
You don't stop being a fan just because your expectations aren't being met. If that were so there would be no Cub fans left.

I too was very disappointed by the first two games. Didn't stop me from driving to Champaign or watching the Minn game on TV. I'm glad now. those were two very entertaining games.

Sure, I'd love for us to be the Boise State of the Midwest but overall I'm very pleased with where the football program is today. Victories over Big-10 schools two years in a row. I know Purdue and Minnesota aren't that great but it wasn't that long ago that even the bottom of the Big-10 would mop the floor with us.
Interesting thread. I attended the Bowling Green game in 03 and the MAC championship game in 05 (hope that I have the years right) and I enjoyed both experiences. I focused on how proud I was of our coaches, our student atheletes and the integrity of our program. Every time that I hear our players interviewed I know that the program has solid leadership and that the players are being coached in life as well as in football. Coach Novak truly laid a solid foundation and built a program that we can all be proud of. I did not feel bad for the players when they lost the MAC championship game (win or lose it was a great experience for them); I did feel bad for coach Novak, he put his heart and soul into our program and I really wanted him to win at least one championship during his head coaching career.

I am headed to Akron this weekend and win or lose I will enjoy the game.
A few seperate thoughts:

TerryR- I don't think he's saying he's done being a fan, just stepping back a little, I don't see anything wrong with that, if he decided he was becoming an Ohio State fan, that'd be one thing.

chuck- you make a very good point, this program produces pretty darn good young men and there's been very few times when I've been embarassed to be a Huskie. Go 2 - 10, I'll still support the program. Have a program that conistently turns up on the wrong side of the news (maybe gets caught point shaving) and I'd think about turning my back.

I relate to the health/sanity thing. I went through a stretch where I wouldn't go to home games because I just got too wound up.

Now and then I try to remember that being a fan is a hobby- it should should add to life. When it isn't, cooling off a little helps me out.

That's a good point. I'd rather lose a couple extra games and do things the right way, then win by bringing in miscreants. Novak did things the right way and still improved the program. So far Kill has carried that forward, and we haven't been in the news for scandals or anything like that.
Okay, here's my thing...

I get very passionately involved in the teams I root for and support. For me, that is only one team right now - the NIU Huskies. My rabid nature is in my genes. My dad was a huge Cub fan (as was I as a kid). He bled Cubbie blue. When the Cubs lost, my dad was so mad that you could not even talk to him. Thus, my youth was spent talking to my mom.

I get very nervous before and after Huskie games. It is as if I have a financial stake in the team. During the games, unless the Huskies are comfortably winning - and how rare is that? - my family knows not to try and console me. They leave me alone. On the other side of the coin, when the Huskies win, I am on an incredible high for a couple days. I cannot take these swings, and thus I need to buffer myself a little.

I do not like losing, and I do not have the temperament to say, "Hey, good game. We'll get 'em next time." When I see coaching decisions that are incredibly stupid, I go nuts. When I see crazy stuff from Athletics Administration - or nothing at all when they should be doing something - I shake my head and question my support.

In adddition, I see very little being done to lift us from mediocrity. I have been way too spoiled by 2003. That level of excitement has not been reached for the last 7 years and may not be reached again for quite awile. I saw the potential in 2003, and the buzz and excitement were not properly captured and marketed. One of the reasons is the lack of getting quality teams into Huskie Stadium as a draw. A win against a Big 10 team on the road is exciting. But, can you imagine the excitement of beating a recognized BCS team AT HOME? Think it would be difficult attracting fans after that?

During football season, I am trying to no longer make the Huskies the center of my life. I will go to the home games I feel like and watch the others and the away games on TV or listen on radio. That way, I can turn the TV or radio off before my blood boils and shoots out through my nostrils.

Any of you others in the same boat as me?
