NORFOLK — Gareth Hissong picked a fine time for his first career catch.

Hissong, William and Mary's fifth-year senior tight end, caught a 4-yard touchdown pass with 4:45 to play to give William and Mary its first lead and a 21-17 victory against Old Dominion in the two teams' first-ever meeting on Saturday night.

The TD pass capped an eight-play, 65-yard drive, aided by a pass interference call in the end zone, and came from Hissong's roommate, Tribe quarterback Mike Callahan, another fifth-year senior whose first collegiate game came three weeks ago.

"I was completely confident that it was going to work," said Callahan, who was 21-of-31 for 290 yards and two touchdowns. "Honestly, the only thing I was scared of on the play was not being about to get it over the D-lineman that was in my face. I knew he was going to catch it."

William and Mary (2-1), coming off a national semifinal appearance and ranked as high as No. 12 in the country, was widely expected to dominate Old Dominion (1-2), playing just its 14th FCS game, in the teams' first-ever meeting at sold-out Foreman Field.
