We've got a Kelvin Sampson situation here...
Why is it that everyone just loves him? He puts his nice face on....but aside from that, he's a damn cheat.
Proof again that we live in a messed up culture. Our man of integrity Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl is a liar. He's the one who handed out punishment to his players for indiscretions...marijuana, guns, etc. It's not as bad as Bill Clinton...because Pearls lies were only to the NCAA and I don't know if he was under oath.

"I've made some serious mistakes, and for that I'm truly sorry," a tearful Pearl said during a Friday news conference. "I provided incorrect and misleading information to the NCAA. I've learned some invaluable lessons. After I provided the false and misleading information, subsequently I went back and corrected the record.

"I learned that it's not OK to tell the truth most of the time, but you've got to tell the truth all of the time," he said.

Way to go coach. I thought we learned that in the first grade. The role model man has four children.... He made it 25 years before he divorced his wife.

Bruce...thanks for being my hero. I hope you can get through the suffering of having your salary reduced.

Lying should be a big deal. The President lies under oath...nothing happens... Bruce lies to the NCAA...nothing happens. The reactions to both situations ought to be automatic immediate termination. We are messed up.

At least the biggest problem I have with my coach is that he hires a UAB guy instead of Mister. When that decision was announced, I was crushed. Mister's qualifications apples to apples are superior to the Murry UAB guy. No offense to Johnson...I hope he shines but loyalty to UAB while you coach at ETSU doesn't go over big with me. Mister will have to wait till Murry goes away. He would have never played at ETSU if Murry was coaching in the 90s. Culpeper Virginia is not the recruiting ground that California is. Mister...keep going, don't let your Alma mater get you down. You are the over-comer. I hope Bluefield goes undefeated. If I was at the next Murry news conference...I would ask what the problem was with Mister...I think I know the answer...He's from Culpeper and not Memphis.

This situation reminds me of Lain Kiffin showing his Tennessee players tapes of USC. Murry is showing he is not a true Buc.

The adoration of Pearl makes me want to vomit.

Maybe Mister needs to have ETSU send his application for Bailey's job on down to Knoxville..after the NCAA comes down on their program..the might need some coaches..

Maybe Murry is not a true Buc but Pearl has proven to be a true Vol.. just like the football team, his players have been arrested and suspended and kicked off the team and now he has embarassed the university as well.. UT thought that after Kiffin left they could start to clean up the athletic department and clean up the "thug" reputation.. but now Pearl comes along and makes Kiffin look like a boy scout!
I just feel sorry for Pat Summitt. She has done everything right, and continues to have to work for an embarrassing institution.

But for what its worth, I do believe the punishment was quite severe and equitable in this case.

The punishment so far is just what the university has done.. the NCAA is just starting their investigation...

And yes you are correct about Pat Summitt.. Pearl's wife of some 25 years got the mail one day and found tax bills for 2 houses.. she thought they only had 1.. the other house was the one he bought for his girl friend.. there were rumors around Knoxville at that time that the other woman was Pat Summitt.. NOT TRUE.. but she has had to put up with that kind of crap in addition to seeing her school dragged down by male coaches and players..
Anyone here who's never told a lie to anyone ever, stand up and raise your hand. If anyone on here does, you're either being saracstic or you're a liar.
Pearl did what he did, but he took ownership of it. He didn't have a slush fund for players, he made phone calls when he shouldn't have. He didn't have student managers writing papers for his players who couldn't read a stop sign, he made phone calls. Get over yourselves people. Coaches at the NCAA will tell you that if you're not operating in the gray area or outright cheating somewhere, you're not winning. And that goes for every level...
There were around 100 illegal contacts with recruits over a 3 year period.. they used cell phones that they thought could not be traced back to them.. coach Pearl lied to the NCAA investigators and assistant coaches also lied to the NCAA investigators too..that's why the university cut their pay too..
Gotta disagree with you, Lover; this is hardly a minor indiscretion. If it were only a minor indiscretion, than UT would've not yanked 1.5 million from him and banned Pearl and some of his assistants from off-campus recruiting for an entire year. They know the severity of what he did. As 'Island alluded to, ask Kelvin Sampson if excessive contact with prospects is merely stepping into the gray.

This is the tip of the iceberg for Pearl. UT fans love to sanctimoniously slam Calipari, but these are two peas in a pod.

Now that I've read the full reports and not just the snippet that I'd seen... this one is beyond the gray, way over in the clear blue yonder!! Damn! They were playing with fire. Coaches aren't very smart but to think you are THAT smart is just asking for the hammer to come down!
Phone calls aren't that big of a deal in the big scheme of things, but it's a pretty clear cut rule. The limits are black and white, there is no room for gray. In this situation, Pearl chose to intentionally break the rules (along with his staff) and then lied about it. The fact that he used throw away phones shows that he knows what he was doing was wrong. He got punished severely by UT. For the first time I can remember, cheating at the highest levels of college basketball did not pay off for the coach. Normally cheating equals a promotion and a fat contract at a bigger school -> Calipari. In Pearl's case, it actually cost him money. I'm sure other coaches are giving this some attention seeing the penalties levied by Pearl's own institution.
Exactly, this is much more effective punishment than anything from the NCAA could be in terms of deterring the behavior. The school does not have to pay for something that a past coach did, they instead get to pay for what their current coach did.

The NCAA should allow this punishment to stand as the only punishment, as it is severe enough and equitable to the parties involved.
Did anyone see an article that detailed the specifics of Pearl's contact with these recruits? Irrespective of the cover up, I'm trying to see how far out of bounds (parden the pun) he was with his contact. That is, did he contact these recruits a few extra times or was the contact in excess by 100's of texts/calls? Also, can anyone verify if he did in fact use a prepaid phone to call these prospects. I'm trying to build a case to my friends who are Pearl apologists!

Bruce might have to sell one of his cars. How can a man survive on a half million a year? I guess Bruce will have to stop going out to eat.

I think that Bruce probably violated his contract about adhering to NCAA rules. Terminate the man. Where is Arnold Schwarzenegger? Bring in Donald Trump.

Buccaneerloveer...I wish you would stop siding with the rule breakers. You must really hate the police. You have many posts siding with the bad guys suggesting that we have all broken a rule now and then. Just because you take ownership of it doesn't get you off the hook. I hope Pearl and other like him get fired, terminated. In this culture, the people who cheat seem to get affirmation, atta boy. My hope is that Pearl is finished. When he is announced as coach in the season opener, I would be the first to boo! Since I'm not a UT fan, I won't be there...but I admit to liking this Derek Dooley fellow. He seems to be the kind of person who will teach his players the correct way to do things. I sure hope he doesn't get caught in Tennessee's criminal culture.
Every football and basketball coach at every school at every level have at least a few fans who don't like them and want a new coach.. and the Bruce Pearl haters in Knoxville are having a field day right now..they see a chance to finally get rid of him..

I don't know if that will happen anytime soon...but.. the NCAA is continuing to investigate..and according to mrsec.com, they have also found out that he entertained recruits at his home in 2008.. he lied to the investigators about that too.. but unfortunately for him...
there are photos...

There's fear (discussed on Knoxville TV over the weekend) that because football and baseball and basketball are all under investigation at UT for recruiting problems..and because of all the incidents involving football and basketball players..there might be penalties for lack of institutional control...
Bruce Pearl will probably get fired soon and also since the NCAA loves to punish schools and investigate out of the wahoo like they've been doing lately UT will probably be like USC and not be allowed in the NCAA tournament. Tennessee football will be good next year and maybe be in a big bowl but for basketball it will be like the old days when nobody cared, this is gonna hurt the basketball program hard. I mean one bleacherreport article said UT should leave the SEC, The SEC may just kick them out.

UT leave the SEC??? The SEC kick them out?? I think Alabama would need to be the first in line if conferences actually cared about violations! Maybe bleacherreport should just stick to covering games and doing stats because they really have NO IDEA of how college athletics works.
