With all the pet threads going I thought I would share. After a short fight with the cancer, I had to put down a family member this morning. Tipper was with us for 12 years and was very much a large part of our family. She had a sweet disposition and was not the least bit German Shepard mean. Very social. Just don't mess with the wife or one of the grandkids!

We let her hang on as long as she appeared to be in no pain. The mass got to the point that she could not eat and her airway was getting constricted. We knew it was time. It was very hard

our little girl basset, now ten, appears to be losing weight QUICKLY... I'm so worried that this is what the culprit is.

Our thoughts go out to you during this difficult time.
I will be an inconsolable wreck when her time comes.
I am so sorry.....just remember you will see her again some day

So sorry. We all know how hard this is for you. Hang in there and remember she is watching over you and your family.

I had a cat that i thought had cancer when it lost a bunch of weight and was losing big clumps of fur. He was getting pretty old. It ended up being a problem with it's kidneys or liver (can't remember now). Anyways, with medication my cat was able to gain a lot of weight back. I don't know if that happens in dogs too, but i'd take her to a vet quickly. It could be something else that is treatable.

To the OP, i'm sorry to hear about your loss. It's tough putting a pet down, but ultimately you did the right thing. Remember that and enjoy the memories of your pet.

I've had to put down 5 cats and 1 dog in my lifetime so far. It's never easy. I got a dog now that i love more than any pet i have ever had. She is so beautiful and original and she makes me laugh every day in times when i need to laugh. She is 4 now, but when that times comes, i'll be so heartbroken.
Willie Becton, I agree, the best thing to do would be to take your dog in and have them do a blood panel. There are several ailments which strike older animals and cause them to lose weight, but are not cancer and are treatable. If it is the worst, there is still hope of maintaining a good quality of life and prolonging life, if caught early enough.

For the OP, I, too, extend my sympathies. They give us so much joy and unconditional love...it is so, so difficult when they go. Your heart must be in pieces. I am sorry.
Sorry to hear the news. I pray that we won't have to deal with this for quite a while. our cats are 9 and 4 and our dogs are 21 months and 6 months. On the other hand, my Jack Russell/Beagle mix who has been ''staying'' with my mom for over 9 years now is about 12 or 13 now and has had some scares, but he's trucking on for now.

Anyone going to the Weenie race Sunday? Our Hans has been told that if he doesn't at least win his heat it will be a long walk home. We let him slide last year with a 2nd place finish since he was only 9 months old. Kidding, of course...but he'd better win.
Sorry to hear of your loss. I know many people that never have owned and loved a pet sometimes must look at dog/cat/ect.. lovers and scratch their heads wondering why humans go through such sorrow when they lose their pet. We all know why and share your pain. When the time is right you will know it and find a new companion for your family. Enjoy the memories.
Sorry to hear this. She was a beautiful Sheperd.
