I was fortunate enough to go to a coaching clinic by Shellas Hyndman last weekend and thought this was worth sharing.
Coach Hyndman is very high on Brek Shea's potential ... he apparently tried to recruit him at SMU before he made the national team and has had him with FC Dallas for some time. He indicated that after the tie with Inter Milan, that Rafa Benitez was interested in him. For the right price, this may be a transaction that goes down. Shea is at just about the right stage in his career to command a lot of $$ with a transfer.
But, as preparation for the next world cup starts to ramp up, I'd really keep an eye out for this kid... he's just 20 years old, and seems to have really started to contribute a lot for FCD. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to follow FCD much this year, but I will be going to the game against the Red Bulls.
Overall, I'm really grateful to coach Hyndman, FCD, and the sponsors (Dick's Sporting Goods ... chalk one up to the board software ...) for the clinic.
Brek Shea does have potential but a move to Inter would kill his career. At 20, he needs as many minutes on the field as possible. Inter wouldnt proved that for him. Sasha Kljeistan has done it the right way for an American. Go from MLS to a good team at a mid level European league. Get playing time and succeed.
The past moves to big clubs for young americans(spector and howard to Man U, Jozy to Villareal, Donovan to Leverkusen, etc) haven't worked.
I know I'm stretching saying Leverkusen is a big club.
As a relatively new FCD fan (I only really started following them at the beginning of this season), I don't know how Shea compares to former FCD stars, but he is certainly a major contributor on this year's team. There are still signs of immaturity (he gets visibly frustrated after making a mistake, sort of like Jozy Altidore), but with experience, I think that will go away.
I don't like the prospect of selling Shea to Inter - perhaps a loan would work out IF Shea were to see playing time. I think that, for the sake of Shea's development, he would be better served by either staying at FCD or moving to a mid-level European team.

Shea needs to shift to left back if he wants to assure a regular spot on the national team.

I'd agree. I think Omar Gonzalez will end up as one of our starting CBs in 2014 with Onyewu(if he ever recovers), Gale Agbossoumonde, Bocanegra(if he stays the entire cycle), Ike Opara, or Clarence Goodson. Left Back won't be easy for him if Parker Walsh develops. That kid has talent....very raw, but has the physical tools at 18 years old. Santiago Bedoya and Euan Holden are possiblities as well. If those last names sound familiar, well they should. Those are Alejandro Bedoya and Stuart Holden's little brothers. Also, there is still a chance that Dolo comes back for his 31st World Cup.
I would love if somehow Walsh, Gonzalez, Agbossoumonde, and anyone but Bornstein developed enough to start for us in 2014. As this is a transition cycle for the USMNT, it would be great to get them enough experience together to hit it hard during what should be a very good 2018 cycle.
