Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I don't get why UAB's student newspaper publishes an article about SEC football. There is a place to get that type of article - it's called every other paper and website on the planet.

The Crimson White ran an article on UAB football. Just Sayin'.
BOTH of them are U of AL SYSTEM newspapers--just saying.

Original poster said the article was about SEC football, not Alabama.

In answer to the original posters question, I suspect it is because they write about what the student population is interested in.
IMO, there is no way the article belongs in the Kaleidoscope.

It is one thing to mention SEC schools, but to dissect which games are important is totally ridiculous.

None of the games mean jack squat to me.
Write an article about C-USA instead.
at least she realizes the "parody" in the sec. honestly, it sounded liked a 9th grader wrote it.
The one thing that makes me proud about my college career is that I changed my major from journalism. I would hate to think that I would have a journalism degree from a school that has a newspaper with these mistakes. I know UAB has put out some fine writers with journalism degrees, but reading the K'scope is just embarrassing. (and yes, I know that the journalism department does not sponsor the newspaper, but when one reads a school newspaper, it reflects on the journalism department.)

In addition to the "parody" mistake
Quote:The SEC East looks to be the weakest it has been in many years; however, the parody within the division will be seen with almost every team in the division having a legit chance at punching a ticket to Atlanta in December.

there's this one as well:

Quote: The Gators will look to prove their critics wrong as sophomore quarterback John Brantley takes the reigns.

and this one:

Quote:The matchup of Tigers is always a fun one to watch; however, this year’s edition will be highly anticipated with almost expectedly everything on the line within the conference.

That word might be being used correctly, but the sentence was so bad, I wasn't sure what the writer was trying to say.

And that was just skimming it. I am sure Grammar Nazi could find numerous other problems. It is obvious to me that the writer was so excited about writing about his favorite team and the conference they play in that he didn't bother to check for errors.

and this just makes me want to 03-puke

Quote:
The Tide, on the other hand, is used to the hype by now as it comes with the territory of winning a national championship, much less thirteen.

The K'scope should be shut down completely and rebooted with something a little more

Plus that guy is a junior.
I decided to check out some other articles from UAB's own Studs Terkel:

Here is the latest:

http://insideuab.com/2010/08/what-to-wat...er-sports/
in which the writer opens the article with nothing other than a run-on sentence. Nice

Quote:It’s that time again Blazer Fans, the humidity is growing, classes are starting and the inevitable procrastination for those classes is just beginning. Fall season has approached us and with that comes the start of some entertaining play in Blazer athletics.

And when did we start growing humidity?

In another article about trainer Lou Deneen, apparently the UAB basketball team still played a version of 40 minutes of hell last year:

Quote:The 40 minutes of hell-game-play can only be accomplished with success with a well-conditioned intact roster. Enter Coach Lou DeNeen.

In an article to incoming freshmen about how to be a Blazer fan (I wish someone else had written this) the writer points out that

Quote:Being in the same state with Alabama and Auburn can make things difficult when choosing teams to pull for, but it’s time to establish that being a Blazer is 100%.
03-lmfao That is the definition of irony.

In the same article, the writer is giving a history lesson on UAB basketball, and states:

Quote: UAB Basketball shocked the NCAA world in March 2004 with a one-point victory over overall top-seed Kentucky in the second round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
UAB Basketball had played well in years past; however, this was the first true mark on the big stage for the Blazers.

Truly pathetic.
Quote:I know UAB has put out some fine writers with journalism degrees

I thank you.

I'm just going to assume this was an attempt at SabanicVerses-style irony and let it pass. 57 NCs! RTR! RTR!
It is good to read articles from writers who are proud to be at UAB instead of articles from those who wish that they were at some other school. I would read with interest an article on the most important games this year in CUSA.

I quit reading the student paper long ago. The sport articles are so bad....words cant do them justice. The writers have clearly not had any interest in UAB before becoming "beat" writer for them. I have no issue with an article about Alabama or Auburn but it is stupid to have an SEC article when we never have a CUSA article.
I hope GN just didn't choke on his own vomit and red ink.
GN.......???????????????????? where are you?
Make sure you let the writer know how you feel or all this talk will be for nothing. That email is Email: tabdalla@uab.edu

Also tell the paper how you feel http://www.uab.edu/kscope/contact
Well if you do contact them, give them some perspective on where you are coming from, and try to be constructive (very few people take being attacked very well). He maybe a 2nd year college student, still learning. Also the editors should be checking articles, so let them know you are disappointed. Maybe if they realize alums, that could potentially hire them in a few years, still read the paper they will pay a little more attention to detail.
When I was a Sports Columnist for the K-Scope, I tried my best to be a Student version of a UAB beat writer.

I couldn't take the management and crappiness of the paper.

I am now currently organizing a privately-run UAB Media project starting with this year's football season.

K-Scope is hopeless.
Again...

THIS is what a "Welcome to Blazer Fanhood" article should be:

(Written by me, of course...but still) :-P

Yep, that is what we expect an article to be.
