Chipper Jones has a torn ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season. This hurts my Braves, can they still maintain the lead on the Phillies without the captain?

The saddest part is that he is retiring at the end of the season and it would have been nice to see him have a chance to win some playoff games if not the entire thing.

Retiring? I've been locked up too long. He still looks like Opie.
One of the all time great 3B in MLB history. Switch hitter, 436 homeruns. Was probably going to retire at the end of the year. Would have been nice to see him go out with Bobby Cox. I still think they can hang on in the East.
chippers career is now officially over, no way he will want to go thru the grind of trying to rehab that thing to be back quickly. one of the best of my generation. He struggle greatly in the first half but was starting to swing it in the last few weeks. The braves will get caught by the phillies. And good luck to all teams trying to beat the phillies in a playoff series. And that includes the cardinal fans!!
From a Cards fan, sorry for this. Chipper is first class and will be missed at 3rd. I watched some of their game on Sunday and he made a really nice play over at 3B for a guy who is retiring.
The Braves are going to miss that .265 Average.
I don't know why people are saying just because of this the Phillies will catch the Braves. From the months of May/June the Braves led the NL in runs scored despite Chipper hitting like .250 with 3 homers and his OPB was like .330. I'll give the Phillies the better ace (Halladay). But if you go 1-5 the Braves rotation is just as good as the Phillies. Lidge has been hurt, but the Braves bullpen is much better than the Phililes. Martin Prado was like 2nd in the league in hitting when he went out with injury last week. He's suppose to be back Monday, and will slide over to 3B (which is his natural position, position he played in the minors). Omar Infante is hitting .330 and can slide over to start every day at 2nd. I'll agree the injury hurts the Braves, but not so much in the situation everyone is making it out to be. Chipper is the clubhouse leader, Chipper is no longer the guy who hits .320, 30 homers, 100 RBI's. So while yes it's a severe blow to their lineup, it's not going to help the Phillies catch the Braves. The key to the rest of the season will be the production of McCann, Heyward and Glaus. The pitching will be there, and matches up fine with the Phillies. After Kershaw beats the Phillies tonight, Atlanta will have a 3 game lead and most of their remaining games at home (where they have the best home record in the Majors)
Upsets team chemistry and moral.

He looked pretty run down in the picture of him I saw today.
Once Prado is back it works out well. Move Infante over to third, and put Prado at second. That way you keep Infante's bat in the lineup and get one of the best hitters back from the DL. I think they will be fine.
1. Omar Infante 2B .330+ BA
2. Martin Prado 3B .320+ BA
3. Jason Heyward RF
4. Brian McCann C
5. Troy Glaus 1B
6. Alex Gonzalez SS
7. Rick Ankiel CF
8. Melky Cabrera LF

Best bullpen in baseball, one of the best starting rotations in baseball, one of the best benches in baseball.

Luckily the Braves have an extra .330 BA 2010 All-Star hitter ready to fill in for Chipper. I doubt Cox puts Heyward in the 3 spot, but I'd love this lineup.

Also, its not like Chipper is gone. He is still going to be on the bench and in the clubhouse. I wouldn't be surprised if he was even more involved with chemistry and is an even better leader.

The Braves will be just fine.

I hate seeing anyone's career ended, but this made me LOL.

Infante is a better defensive second baseman as opposed to 3rd. Prado played 3rd in the minors and some when he first came up. I agree with keeping both in lineup, but I'd put Prado at 3rd.

I guess when you've played 14 years in the big leagues you can have 1 or 2 years hitting under .300. LOL
best bullpen in baseball?? how many saves has wagner blown in the last month??

I'm not talking about in the last month. Wagner, Moylan, Saito, Venters, O"Flaherty and Farnsworth are better than any bullpen in baseball. So Wagners has blown a few saves the past month. His era is like 1.60. Give me that over Lidge, Madsen, Contrares, Romero etc... Just wait. Braves will be in playoffs!
Where were all you Braves fans when I was singlehandedly defending myself in the Adam Wainwright thread?

Also, Chipper might have a .265 average on the year, but with a .381 OBP and and OPS over .800.

Couple that with the .307 average over the past 40 plus games...this is a big loss.

Don't forget, he hurt himself making ONE HELL OF A PLAY.

So yeah, I think it's safe to say they'll miss him, 8589.
dont trust Farnsworthless in crunch time.
