This is such an excellent idea! I'm happy for Birmingham getting this done. Can't wait to visit when I return...

Birmingham Railroad Park to open in September

Agreed. This was a very positive move for Birmingham. I hope more are to follow.
I can't wait for it to open up so I can go check it out. I think this would be a great place for the Crawfish Boil to be if the city ends up building that Westin Hotel on the vacant lots where Crawfish is now.
A baseball field would look good on the other side of those tracks.
Very, very cool.

A vibrant downtown is just what the 'ham needs.

The proposed Minor League Baseball Stadium would be on the property at the very bottom of the photo, if all the stars align and by some miracle that organization gets the Barons to commit to a move downtown (highly unlikely).
It's a block from where my wife works. She's looking forward to lunches there once things cool off. Very nice.

Then the Hoover Met could be converted to the home of UAB Football/NCAA Men's Soccer Final Four permanently. 04-cheers
Are they going to pick it up and move it to the southside?
There is a loft on the north side of Morris Ave. that I looked at before I moved. From the upper floors on the south side you would have a gorgeous view of the park. Fix Play is what I think they were called...

Seriously? A baseball park?

Open air concert/soccer/football stadium is hands down a much better investment for moving Birmingham forward.
Birmingham needs a football stadium, not a baseball park for Pete's sake. Someone, anyone build a friggin football stadium in Birmingham. At this point I don't give two tiddly winks who does it.
Birmingham does'nt need a football stadium. UAB is the one that needs a football stadium.
I believe this is also only the first phase of the railroad park. Does anyone know what the next phases involve?

There is supposed to be a small amphitheater (think Shakespeare in the Park, not Widespread Panic) and a building. I think the building is supposed to house a railroad museum(?)...
Lots of light + lots of people = lower crime rate for the area. The more B'ham develops these and other attractions, the more crime will be suppressed. Criminal activity thrives on isolation and darkness.
Not really, there is more that went into that thing than you see on the surface. Now you want to see waste? Look at the UAT stadium expansion.

The Athletic dept will make out like bandits on that expansion. The big ticket item (and the real driving force behind the expansion) is the sky boxes that rent for 6 figure fees. They will watch the games on the 60"+ digital TVs as if they were home since most won't know enough about football to appreciate endzone perspective on the game. As long as the Crimson Tide is winning big, there are enough riders on the bandwagon to make the investment pay off. There are still a lot of folks for whom this recession is just something other people talk about, and they enjoy being able to show off their wealth by such means. Many will arrive days early in large RVs (paying hefty rental for choice spaces) and "party-hardy" for the whole weekend with their friends of like means. Those are the people for whom the expansion was really designed to accomodate. The open air additional seating is just bonus publicity for stadium size status.
The city is going to have to do a much better job of controlling panhandling than they have done in other areas of town (such as 5pts) if this thing is going to perform it's intended function. For those who dont know, there is a very large vagrant population that often lingers in that general vicinity. I know they say they will, but I will believe it when I see it.
