Why is he being released from Alabama?

Appreciate the heads up.
it was announced as sabans preseaon press conference today

here is some of the report that can be found at

Alabama coach Nick Saban announced at today's preseason press conference that sophomore safety Rod Woodson is no longer a part of the Crimson Tide's football program.

According to Saban, it was "mutally agreed it would be better for him to continue his career somewhere else."

"He will transfer and have an opportunity to do that," Saban said. "We were very helpful in trying to give him an opportunity someplace else. We wish him very well. He did a good job for us."

Multiple sources had previously indicated that academics could be an issue in Woodson's case. After the initial announcement, Saban later made it sound more like a dismissal from the team.

"I don't really feel it's a problem, when you have people in the organization who aren't accountable, how not having one would affect anything," Saban said. "We cannot make decisions about the future of players who aren't accountable for what they're supposed to do and not responsible to what they're supposed to do as a member of this team, regardless of what they issue is, behavioral, academic, football-related.

"We have a lot of good players on the team, and I would rather move somebody from another position to play where we don't have enough players than to allow somebody not to do the right things and be involved. I don't think we do anyone any good if we do that."

Woodson, a signee from Olive Branch, Miss., playing sparingly on special teams as a true freshman. It's a key loss for the Crimson Tide, since Woodson was expected to compete for a starting safety role this season along with Robert Lester.
This kid is a headhunting badass. I hope we find a way to get him to come here. And, no I do not care what he what he did to get kicked off.
Does anyone know anything about his transfer? I think you are right about transferring to another SEC school. I wonder if LP recruited him at all while at LSU.
From what I hear is that he just didn't fulfill his academic duties (from alabama's beat writer) don't think it was anything too much more than that. Kid can flat out play and he had some nice tackles on kickoffs this year. Hope porter looks into him more. Was in contention w/ Robert Lester for the other safety spot alongside Mark Barron. Between him and ballentine, that secondary could shape up nicely in the years to come.
so, he was going to have to sit out regardless due to academics.
If it's only academics, I definitely want him.
I'm hearing North Alabama.
can he go there one year, without sitting out
and
then go anywhere he wants for year 3 and 4
Not many guys out there with a NC ring with 4 years left to play 3.
Fox 13 just said we were in on him, TIFWIW.
Looks like he is going somewhere in Alabama. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/...nsfer.html

But the big news was the departure of Woodson, who played sparingly as a freshman defensive back last fall and contributed more on special teams.

"We were very helpful in trying to get him an opportunity someplace else, and we wish him very well," Saban said. "He did a good job for us."

Mary Woodson isn't sure where her son will end up.

"He's going to transfer somewhere in Alabama," she said, but she isn't sure where that will be.

She said she was under the impression that her son's grades weren't a problem. There "might have been" an off-the-field incident recently involving her son, she said, but she declined to elaborate, saying she knew no details.

Saban gave no reason for the departure, but he talked later in his news conference about maturity, accountability and responsibility.

"We have a lot of good players on the team, and I would rather move somebody from another position to play where we don't have enough players than to allow somebody not to do the right things and be involved," Saban said. "I don't think we do anyone any good if we do that."

UNA is an NCAA school isn't it? If so, he'd be immediately eligible to play there, but if he tried to transfer back to a DIA school after 1 year, he'd still have to sit out.
If he would have followed Sabans orders he'd still be on the team. That being said I'd still love to have him. It's not like he beat up an off duty police officer or anything - he didn't do anything nearly that bad...

probably from this board
North Alabama is a real possibility. Sine UNA is DII I don't believe he has to sit out a year there, given his academics are squared away.

Memphis will be in on Woodson also though. Coach Hopson is pushing for it.

Don't think the kid is looking to sit out a year after he won a NC last season. He has NFL aspirations. Probably why his mom said he was going to stay in AL. Smart move to go after him though.
