Reading the ETSU Visiting team travel guide and found the following about Brooks Gym:

"The arena floor of Brooks Gym was resurfaced prior to the 2009 season. A renovation of the entire main arena is scheduled to start in early 2010. Among the upgrades planned are new seats and lighting, a new sound system, new scoreboards, fresh paint, new doors and windows and the installation of a new heating and air-conditioning system."

I don't remember hearing any announcement about renovations, has anyone else?

I guess they are in the silent phase.
Here is a picture of what looks to be the painting underway from about the end of May.

This is new to me as well.
It's probably the same deal as why they aren't saying anything about the baseball stadium. They are afraid they will run out of money and wont get it completed and don't want to be embarrassed.
According to today's Kingsport Times..work has started on the baseball field.. seats later..
I think this is mostly for volleyball and UH basketball........

I would agree but does it say anything about the future of a basketball arena? My understanding is the new arena would include volleyball courts. If renovations on the existing volleyball court is happening how long will it be before we see an arena.
Why would they make basketball share with volleyball? I know that it's the norm so spare that, but why be the norm? If Brooks is being renovated and still serviceable, then why not continue having volleyball matches there? Volleyball draws about 30 people a game, so having it there only makes sense to me. Renovate it, that puts volleyball on its' own courts all the time, less basketball practice for UH (who can use the side courts at the dome).
Keep the arena basketball only.
I don't think there is any way basketball would be sharing a new arena with volleyball. With as much as they have to share time in the Dome now, the only thing they would be booted from a new arena for would be concerts and graduation.

Volleyball would definitely stay in Brooks, especially with their paltry crowds. I'm sure the renovations are geared with the idea of that being their home and the home of UH Basketball for quite some time.
Well.......remember there is the angle that one of the options being considered for a "new arena" is retro-fitting the Dome. Presumably that could or would put it out of service for some months, at which time basketball would have to be played in Brooks or conceivably at Freedom Hall.
And I have heard rumblings that that option is in ascendancy because it would be so much cheaper, and it's right there on campus anyway.
To be clear, the rumblings I've heard are not terribly "weighty" (yet), but I do believe that option currently has a slight preference over a brand new one, in the view of those who have to figure out the dollar aspects.

Personally, I would want the new tennis center built first, for selfish reasons and because that's been "promised" since 2006......
And I know prevalent sentiment on this board, so no need to belabor that........
Same thing for a track - and still don't have a clue where they think they're going to put that.........
poster - the tennis center will never be built! sorry to bust your bubble. the coaches are not American and not enough families want to donate their hard earned money to a team without local players.
I think you are on to something...volleyball is an easy (cheap) fix and it gives flexibility to make changes in the dome if ETSU doesn't fall deeper into a financial hole.
track will be built next/last - I am guessing mostly private dollars will make that happen. and I agree with you - where? since soccer's location makes the rest of the land out there useless (remember there was a track, tennis facility, baseball field there before soccer was built. way to manage your land athletics)
I still think a tennis center will be built before a new basketball arena.
Respectfully, methinks you don't see the "lay of the land" clearly enough....
We shall see..........
I'm with the doc on this one. If its cheaper, they are probably going to do the dome-renovation thing mentioned rather than build a new arena. And if they do anything on floor level to build an actual seating bowl, then the dome's indoor tennis courts will have to go bye-bye.

Therefore, the tennis center will be built first because they have to have somewhere to go practice/play in inclement weather. They could build a tennis center cheap if they really wanted/needed it done quickly. Basically a large metal building with some outdoor courts behind it would work.
ACtually the plan I heard to renovate the dome was actually build a new arena within an arena. The new court would be on one of the ends of the dome and turned sideways. And they would build all new seating. The tennis courts could still be used.
This is why I personally don't want those waterheads making large monetary decisions that could affect the university for years to come...
Hey CHEAP ASS! Spend some damn money and build something nice!!!!

Listen. The tennis "center" is going to be built. There *will* be a "tennis only" facility, for use all year 'round. It will not be cheap - probably at least $3 million. Yes, that's cheap compared to a basketball arena. I guess it's all relative.

The Dome's current tennis courts are hardly capable of being called "tennis courts". When they were last resurfaced, oh, about 8 years (or so) ago, the university got totally hosed because they weren't done right and it was money mostly wasted. The specifics of the surface refinishing weren't clear enough in the contract and ETSU either couldn't, or wouldn't, make them do it right. I never could find out the truth on that. I assume you all know virtually no teams will play ETSU in the Dome because of that, and thus they are of minimal usefulness. Yes, they're better than nothing, but not much. The new tennis center will have about 12 or so courts - with at least 6 inside - unless of course the cheapness of the university/the state prevents that. It was supposed to have been completed by now, but we all know how that goes............

Sorry, shadow; you also clearly don't know the lay of the land on this issue.........

And yes, the idea I was referring to as gaining ascendancy is the one to build an "arena within the arena" option.

Wow, I'm getting called out for agreeing with you? Thats a new one.03-confused
Is it me or has nearly every athletic facility ever built on ETSU campus been bungled? The Mini-Dome certainly has never been the best place to watch football or basketball. The softball and soccer stadiums still do not have lights. Who knows how the baseball stadium will turn out?
Just curious what individual that is intelligent enough to accumulate three million or so would give it to the current ETSU admin.?
If the new tennis center is going to be finance like the softball & soccer stadiums with bonds backed by ever increasing student fees, then I say it truly is time for Buc rebellion against the Stanton regime.

Keep the arena basketball only.

I would agree that volleyball should stay at Brooks and not shared with basketball but according to the ETSU Atheletic Master Plan the new Basketball arena will seat 8400 for basketball and 'have over 1000 retractable seats for use during home volleyball games'.

So if renovations are being done at Brooks it would seem volleyball will stay were it is and the Basketball Arena is not happening soon.
