UAB...easy enough right? Yet it seems that at every athletic competition someone gets our name wrong: Alabama- Birmingham, Birmingham Alabama, and all the billions of amazing combinations that we have heard.

But what if we kept our hospital system with the UAB name since it's world reknown and 'rename' our athletics "UA- Birmingham"? Now we would not be called UA- Birmingham but simply "Birmingham". In theory, this could help in promoting and winning the support of those in the Birmingham metro region since we would be BIRMINGHAM's team. The idea came from the rare occasion that our b-ball team wears uniforms with only "Birmingham" emblazoned across the jersy. Heck, it's even alliterative to be the Birmingham Blazers and it distances ourselves from our UAT affiliation and confusion that sportswriters and others seem to come across.

In a time in which students and community members don't identify with us could this help? You decide, but UNC System schools and I'm sure others do the same:
(UNC) Charlotte
(UNC) Wilmington
I swear I'm not retarded....but the first choice is suppose to say
"UA- Birmingham but the uniforms would simply say Birmingham"

I forgot about the dumb mod control that changes the hyphenated version of our name. (Really silly of me to forget, especially with my signature and all.)
Can we just get rid of the damn dragon? I don't care how cool it looks...it doesn't look collegiate.

I'll have you both know that Blaze won "Most Collegiate Mascot" at UCA Mascot Camp this year... 05-mafia 05-mafia 05-mafia

"You don't pull the mask off the ole Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with Blaze!"
if we get rid of the dragon, i'm transfering to troy.

no, not really. but blaze > alot of mascots from other schools. like WKU. what is that supposed to be exactly, and what does it have to do with the tops of hills?

Believe it or not, the red blob is a Hilltopper. 01-wingedeagle
UAB sports team should be known as simply Birmingham. This was the original idea in 1978 and a few years after, which is why there were basketball uniforms that simply said "Birmingham".

I'll pretend I didn't hear that... 05-mafia

We've invested way too much into the 'UAB' nomenclature for the last twenty plus years to simply revert back to 'Birmingham'.

Now, should some fortunate momentum occur that brings forth "The University of Birmingham", then by all means... 05-stirthepot
I like UAB, not "Birmingham" or any other alternative.

I love our mascot Blaze, and the dragon logo in general.

It ain't broke. Don't "fix" it.

While I agree with Blazerunit that we've invested a lot in being called UAB, I must ask the question, is it not broke? After all, commentators and writers everywhere can't get our name correct. Heck, throw out the idiots who work in Sports and think about this: If changing to Birmingham would help garner community support and develop a better identity thus promoting school spirit- wouldn't it be worth it?

Mind you, I'm happy being a UAB Blazer but I like to throw out ideas to better ourselves. Also, in no way would anyone know if a name change would produce more or the same lack of community support and school spirit but that's why I posted the poll. Debate away!
I prefer Birmingham in that it further separates us from confusion with UAT. Too many times I've had less knowledgable sports fans asked me if we're the Crimson Turds. I reply there's only one Turd team and it ain't UAB. I really like the simplification of using only Birmingham.
I see no major change in refering to ourselves as UAB and as Birmingham.

Braish, you forgot (UNC) Chapel Hill

Good point. I mean, heck, every college standardized test that I have taken from SAT to ACT to LSAT, and even the ASVAB will ask what college you attend or are applying for and UAT is called just that: Univeristiy of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. So it's easy for 'outsiders' to confuse the two. By going to "Birmingham" we'd almost be doing UAT a favor by preventing confusion of us with them and vice versa.
I think it looks good to have Birmingham on our jerseys. The name should say UAB. The jersey should say Birmingham. Birmingham vs. Memphis anyone? I like the sound of that.
I think it is just a matter of us having to put ourselves on the map. We have started to do that in roundball, but apparently we are going to have to do it in funkyshapedball (football ;-) ) too.

To establish the name "UAB" or any other moniker, we are going to have to beat some big dogs and get on ESPN nationwide.

It took us some time in roundball, and it is still going on really. It will take time in funkyshapedball too.

I think it says a lot this year that Oklahoma fans actually knew who we were before we arrived. Slowly, but surely, we are getting there.
The name dont matter... its what it stands for thats important.

If UAB goes out and kicks a little ass, then everybody all around will know that UAB stands for kickin' ass.

If UAB goes out and stinks the place up, people think UAB stinks, no matter what name you stick on the jersey. Bottom line. Crap is crap no matter what you call it. You know what Im sayin?

You must be the long lost cousin of 13-10.
