Needing Money Sometimes Means Getting Clobbered

Quote:Forget the scoreboard. This game had nothing to do with 0-34, nothing to do with a Georgia team dominating UAB from beginning to end, nothing to do with the Blazers' hope of competing for a Conference USA bowl berth.

It had everything to do with the bottom line.

The most important score to UAB is the $625,000 - give or take a few thousand - that the UAB athletics department gets to add to its budget for agreeing to show up at Georgia's Sanford Stadium on a fabulous September afternoon and send the Georgia faithful back to their tailgating with smiles.

``This is what we have to do to keep ourselves alive," said Watson Brown, current head football coach but also the former and perhaps future athletics director. ``We've got one more year of this. Next year (with Michigan State, Florida State and Mississippi State) is just as bad as this one. But then I hope after that, we can ease up a little bit."

That's nice to hear. Two buy-games per year is a bit rough, although next year's combo probably isn't as bad as this year. Is this Drew Stanton's last year at Mich State?

Quote:The Blazer faithful can talk all they want about how close UAB is to beating another one of the big boys, but the truth is, the only way that happens is for one of the big boys to make enough mistakes to give the Blazers a chance.

Go back two weeks to the season-opener at Oklahoma. The Sooners turned the ball over four times to keep UAB close. Last year in a close loss at Tennessee, the Blazers benefited from three interceptions. Go all the way back to that ``signature" victory over LSU, and you'll find the Tigers turned the ball over six times.

Partially true, but I like to believe that our defense had a hand in forcing those mistakes. It's not like every turnover made was just a stupid decision or bad play by the other teams. Especially the OU game, the two picks were great plays and one of the fumbles was made by a Top 5 draft pick.

Quote:But when a BCS team like Georgia plays almost flawlessly - not at the top of the Bulldogs' game but with no turnovers, dominating defense and superb special teams - the result is a game like this one, where a 10-0 halftime lead might as well have been 100-0.

``I do not have a defeatist attitude," Brown said. ``I'm proud of this team, and I know, if we can stay healthy, we're going to be competitive in our conference.

``But games like this are about survival. We've done a great job committing to keep this program alive (financially). Now, we need the commitment to win."

The second part of this quote speaks volumes, and, I believe, contradicts the first part of this quote. How can you say these games are about survival at the same time as saying you don't have a defeatist attitude? Not setting the goal of winning is the definition of defeatist! Now we need to commit to win?! Now?!?! WTF HAVE WE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST FREAKING DECADE?!?!?! These two quotes, I think, speak volumes about Watson as a coach and essentially sum up why I feel we need to begin looking in a different direction for the program, i.e. new coaching staff.

Quote:That commitment needs to come from the University System Board of Trustees, which Friday, for the first time, heard UAB's detailed proposal for athletic facility upgrades. It's a five-phase plan with an estimated total price tag of $23 million (a fraction of the cost of the University of Alabama's recent athletic facilities upgrades).

``A commitment to win means money," Brown said. ``It means facilities. The dollar is unbelievably important for us."

I find it interesting that he calls out the BoT. I also think it's just as interesting that he compares the price tag of our upgrades to UAT's. Maybe he's not such a Bammer after all? *shrug*

Quote:So UAB sells its team out to the highest bidder, and prays everyone comes back in one piece to compete on more equal footing in conference play.

``I think all the guys were excited about getting a shot at Georgia and Oklahoma," said UAB quarterback Sam Hunt. ``The bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward."

So far, the reward for this season is a little over $1.2 million earned in games against Oklahoma and Georgia.

Unfortunately, that's probably not what these players had in mind.

All in all an interesting article, although I don't think it really said much that we don't already know. Thoughts?

I read this as him saying these games were about FINANCIAL survival...not him saying we just need to survive these games.
1.2 Million isn't too shabby. About 80 more years of this and maybe we can get a stadium! 03-idea Hell, we should just leave our conference and play buy games all year! lmfao
