What is the ideal size for a college athletic conference? Is it 8,9,10,12,16,20? Given the state of NCAA football at this time and period, with 12 games total and usually 8 conference games, an 8 team conference is not good. We live those problems out each year. Is nine the ideal number? You play every conference team each year. Is 12 the right number? You have two divisions of 6 with a championship game. You play every team on your side and three from the other. That way you play everyone every two years. Personally I like the 12 team model.
In the BCS era, a minimum of 9 team, but an idea size is 14. You want no more than 2 teams from each state. Division games will be balance. It is more fair. And having enough inventories justify having Conference Network.
12.
10, LESS REVENUE sharing and more control.
college rules like laws are lazy and obsolete, they need to change w/ the times and the big 12 is leadin the way baby.

a rule change to a 10 team conf championship game is a must thing, it makes sense less revenue sharing and more of a college feel, when these so called elite college regents stop rippin off these 18 yr old kids and start giving these athletes spending money cause they can't play sports, study and work at the same time, the greed of these college presidents or regents or whatever theyr'e called is sickening and appollling.....................

i paid under 10k for a 4 yr college degree in 87................

i had money in my pocket to help out the economy of my country...............the ones who are benefiting r the banks bigggggggggg time and the people who run them on a daily bases r still being paid 70's type low wages, the poor tellers.............

I'm interested, why 14? There will be teams you don't see on your schedule for years that are in your conference.
12 is a nice number for basketball as well. You get a good 16 game conference schedule with 2 against all in your division and 1 against all in the other division.

12 seems to provide a nice variety and competition without becoming cumbersome.
9 Teams is my perfect number. You have a balanced 4 games home and away in football. And in hoops you'd have 8 games @ home and away. I know tv is totally changing the paradigm and what not but a 16 team conference is practically 2 8 team conferences under 1 umbrella. Might as well make 18 the magic number.
12
I think 10 is the perfect number while playing 9 conference games leaving you only having to find 3 OOC games which makes it much easier to make a schedule without scheduling a 1-aa.

I think 10 is the number as well.

Why do you always post like you're drunk?
I'd love a 9 team league. 8 conference games has been the deal for everyone but the PAC Ten for a while. In a 9 team league...you'd play every team and have a full schedule. I think it'd be great. A True Champion would be crowned every year.

i like 10 teams and kick out the schools who can't compete...........
The perfect size of a conference depends on the conference itself. The SEC and B-11,12,13... for example, are now at their optimum sizes (12). Both those leagues will make a crapload of money off their respective championship games.

The ACC has had somewhat of a train wreck for its CCG, but at least the conference received a good raise in TV money. With the money they're making, they probably don't regret the move.

B-12 probably wishes it still had 12, deep down, because their CCG was lucrative.

Pac-10 on the other hand, it remains to be seen how it works out. They had a perfect pairing system set up that has been somewhat futzed up by the 500 or so mile separation between SLC and Denver. Will their fans travel to the CCG, then the bowls? And how will the TV work out?

Big East, finally: I hardly consider eight the ideal number. However, 12 (and a CCG) would be pushing it. The North Atlantic is slim pickings for conference expansion, and there is no perfect, realistic outside candidate that fufills all the characteristics of FB quality, facilities, academics, and media markets. One more school would be good (two ideal) so that scheduling will no longer be a headache. The BE does not need 12 teams and a championship game.
For the BIG EAST probably 10 with everyone playing each other once like the Pac 10 did and the Big XII is going to do.

Plus for Louisville purposes it would allow us to only have to worry about 2 payout games since Kentucky is on our schedule. Years we play UK @ home we would have 5 away conference games and then just schedule a MAC/WAC/Sunbelt team for the final two to finish out the schedule.
We may not agree on the exact number but 8 are too small. And we can’t keep this number too long, when more conferences are playing more than 8 conference games.
12 as that gives you two divisions and a championship game. The main thing with that game is location. Centralize it as best as possible. Washington, DC or Pittsburgh, New Jersey.
16 :)
10 teams (9, 12, 18 and 20 can also be made to work) with 3 OOC/9 conference football games, 18 conference basketball games. No 1-AAs allowed on the schedule or at least going back to the 1 in 4 years rule we used to have.

If its 18 or 20 teams its really just 2 conferences under one umbrella for example:

The new Big Ten should have been:
Big Ten Division: Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, Ohio State
Big East Division: Louisville, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, West Virginia, Rutgers, UConn, Boston College, Maryland, Cincinnati

I also think rotation is a good idea. Pittsburgh, the Meadowlands, Philadelphia are all good locations for such a thing.
