tell them they need to fix their math
I don't think the math is broken to them.
One can really make stats appear any way they like it.

-The cost of active ingredients does not equal to the cost of the drug.
-The cost does not include the amount of money spent to develop the drug which is often in the millions of dollars.
-The cost does not include the money spent on advertising the drug, both to doctors and the general public.
-The cost does not include money that will be used to defend the drug from lawsuits caused by side effects.

Take Lipitor, for instance. It says that it sells for $272. You can buy it for under $100. There is also a generic now available. Most people would have some kind of insurance to help pay for the drug. With mine I think that I would have to pay $50 for a non-generic drug when a generic is available. Some would pay more. Some would pay less.

Do pharm companies jack up their prices particularly when they first come out? You bet. The prices will come down once the generic hits the market.
it has turned into the most powerful lobbying group in DC.
Of course, the "cost of active ingredients" doesn't include the cost of R&D, staff, facility maintenance, the years of trials leading to the release of the drug, equipment required to manufacture the drug, etc. It also doesn't consider that the drug company only has exclusive manufacturing rights to the drug for a certain number of years, after which anyone can make the drug as long as it is an exact copy.

Furthermore, how much of the problem is drug companies try to solve random ailments and how much is society's desire for a magic pill for every conceivable ailment?

Basically, the OP is a load of BS. If you want to see somethign scary, let's turn into France and dictate the price of meds at pennies about manufacturing cost...if that happens, I hope you happy with the current offering, because that'll be the end of drug research. It's already awful that countries like France are collectively f***ing the American consumers by stiffing us with the brunt of the other costs beyond the ingredients.
