Hey all,

Just for the fun of it and for my benefit as well; if you could give any advice to an upcoming freshman at Memphis (such as myself), what would it be and why? Hopefully this thread will bring back many memories for you old alum!
It's best to arrive and look for a parking spot at least 30 minutes before class.

Are you going to be living on campus?

They offer a "food plan"....don't take it, it's a waste of money.

If you had some specific questions...I'm sure I could offer up my experience in those areas.

What do you plan to major in?

DON'T PARK SOUTH OF THE TRACKS!!!!!!(unless of course you're at the Rec Center)

(also...don't try to climb through the train when it is almost stopped...blocking your path to class....or lunch....or that cute girl over there...)

What do you plan to major in?

-Living in South Hall
-Mandatory $300 Dining Dollars
-Majoring in Sports and Leisure Management

Nothing in specific to ask, just looking for people's experiences
South Hall is cool. Had lots of good times there.

Be as active on campus as possible. It's pretty easy to lose interest in school if you aren't involved. Check out the fraternity system and see if it is for you. It's a great way to be active on campus and meet loads of new people.

Def manage your time wisely. Get a planner and write down whats due for your classes. You can have a great time at school but remember what your there for too.

I live by campus and work from home when not traveling so I see parking first hand. It's true that parking is somewhat difficult so arrive early if you do not live on campus. And if you're in a hurry, please take 2 minutes to make sure that you're not blocking in some of us poor old alumni who live in the neighborhood. This happens at least once a month to me.

I lived in Robinson hall my freshman year, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it was rather quiet (mostly grad students at that time) and ended up being a good environment as opposed to some of the things I'd heard about in (richardson) towers.

Another benefit was a job in the library which was extra income and also guaranteed quiet/study time that kept my grades in check.

I'll also second the person that mentioned considering going greek. Is it for everyone? no. Does it allow you to remain involved and keep you interested if it is for you? yes.

If greek life isn't for you consider other campus activities like joining the Student Activities Counsel (SAC) or student government.

College is as much about a rich experience as it is academics. I came out of school a more well-rounded person and my professional life was enriched as a direct result.

I'd also encourage you to take advantage of guest lectures and the occasional class that piques your interest but may be outside of your major. The first 2 years of school are the best time to do this and many students change majors during this time (just try not to make a habit of changing majors).

As you push into your junior and senior years, you need to start thinking about internships and networking for when you graduate. Belonging to student organizations relative to your major is a good start.

I know you think that your Junior/Senior years are a long ways off, but it doesn't hurt to start thinking about graduation which will occur sooner than you think. I see way too many students now get out of school and think "Okay, here's my diploma now where is my job."

Best of luck and feel free to PM me if you want to know anything about MIS or Computer Science.
Hang out at the Varsity Inn, Mongo's Pizza Parlor, London Transport. Poor Red's, Buntyn's,
Playing Space Invaders at the sub shop is a good way to pass time between classes.
Watch out or you will get addicted to watching soap operas in the TV rooms at both ends of the UC.
Say hi often to the dude living in a cardboard box by the tracks.
Go ahead and drop by the Admin building and see if the class catalogs are stacked in the hallway.
Work registration so that you can pull your class cards early.
Every time you get a new parking sticker, place the new sticker far enough right to leave the Tiger from the previous year showing.
Go watch the racquetball team. They are really good.
Consider buying a chain for your bike. Somebody stole one not too long ago.
Have a spare ribbon for your typewriter. And lots of White-Out.
Catch a movie at the Park Theater.
Buy lots of MSU gear.

hilariously awesome post.
South Hall is fun as hell, you will love it there but by the end of the year you'll want out and never look back.

Don't make homemade slip n' slides in the hallway outside your dorm or you will be kicked out at the end of the semester.

DO NOT take 8am classes regardless of what you think. Waking up at 6am every day for 12 years to go to school doesn't help at all. If you think you're trained to wake up early, you're not. Start your day at 9 or 10 untill you get used to college life.

Go to class. Alot of professors will tell you they don't care if you come or not but it's a load of BS. The more they see you there, the more lenient they will be when grading your stuff. It means alot. I was on the fence of getting a 'C' and a 'B' in my Psych class my freshmen year and because I showed up everyday, he gave me a B.

Most of your Gen Ed classes have strict attendance rules. I think English 1010 was like a maximum of 3 days missed and everyday after that was a full letter grade.

Speaking of English 1010, you're going to absolutely hate it. It was a BIG step down from my high school English classes. Feels like you're going back to middle school English. It's so easy so it gets boring REALLY fast. You just gotta make sure you keep showing up, paying attention, and acting like your learning something. Also, most 1010 teachers are grad assistants on power trips so most of your workload will likely come from that class.

I didn't know about the meal plans untill the last week of my first semester. So I went over to Tiger Den and loaded up on every Gatorade I could find in that place. While that was nice, it would have been nice to know I had free $$ sitting around all semester. The new UC looks pretty, but the best food is still easily in the Tiger Den. Chick Fil-A ftw. Avoid fast food, gets expensive. Eat at Buffalo Wild Wings every Thursday :)

Take advantage of the library when studying. Too many distractions at the UC.

Whether you plan to rush a fraternity or not, go through Rush Week. They treat you like royalty and you get free food every night for the entire week.

If you can afford the extra financial burden of joining a fraternity, it's well worth it for it's benefits during and, especially, after college.
DON'T CHANGE YOUR MAJOR. Stick with it even if you don't like it that much. You can do whatever you want once you get that piece of paper. I know several people that thought it would be a good idea to change their major after several semesters and they ended up screwing themselves.

I think the OP was looking for comments for this decade. Just sayin'.

I have to kindly and respectfully disagree with you although I understand what you're driving at.

17/18 year olds rarely know exactly what he/she wants out of school and even if they do they change minds as maturity sets in...

I changed majors and graduated in 4 years and I am extremely happy that I changed majors.

I would qualify your post with "don't change majors after completing your GE requirements and make sure you really want to do it."

Yes. That is sort of what I was getting at. If you do it early enough then you may be alright. It took me 5 years and I didn't switch majors. Haha
