I am wondering if,when you guys laid out your objectives in the beginning (namely the quick jumpp from FCS to FBS), you received a lot of ridicule an opposition from...well the whole world?
I don't think there was much ridicule as the program was expected to jump over..
Meaning.. when football was first introduced, it was already planned to be a DI-A (BCS) program. However rules (I believe) require a stint in D-1AA (FBS) before they can join.

There are smaller schools that only opt for D1-AA due to funding, size, ect. However if you look at the larger schools that don't have programs (or didn't until recently) and have the funding and support, they go plan for the BCS.

Speaking of only Florida teams, FIU, FAU are teams that the same route
Future programs already planned for the BCS - South Alabama and Texas @ San Antonio will have their first year in 2010, then move to BCS in 2013

So its not too uncommon. However we had the benefit of having successful seasons (only 1 losing season since the inaugural year) and big upsets throughout our history to really push our team forward... especially when we were given the rare and golden opportunity when the ACC raid took place.

Due to the successes (and obvious meltdowns 1/2 through) or team is viewed as (and i think rightfully so) the team that -CAN- be a major contender, but falls flat.
An above average program... Not great, but good. (Not too many programs can say they've been in a bowl the last 5 years.) Hopefully our change in leadership can help push that level higher.
I am wondering though if you got opposition from other schools' fans as if you should not even be planning to be going FBS as a start-up. It seems like we are getting crucified by 80% of the fans on message boards every where when we talk FBS. The seriously seem annoyed that a school with over 30,000 students, 100,000 local alumni and a city of 6 million should be talking about big moves like that. Just wondering if you guys were crucified on the internet since you guys are our blueprint,

Crucified? don't think so.

I don't think the "Big 3" (Florida, FSU, and Miami) cared about our jump. Florida is such a recruiting hotbed that the talent is there to open up a big program (look at how many recruits leave the state.) Add to it that they are spread across Florida.

UCF were probably the only ones, (and some still do) that complained about our jump, and try to ridicule our program whenever possible. Probably since we are located in, and recruit close to the same area. Add to it that we jumped over them to an AQ conference, even though their program was in existence for a lot longer.

You are probably feeling the same animosity. In that that your school is located in Atlanta. -IF- (and that's a BIG IF given the established history of the current programs) you can develop a local following and give your school a "hometown" following of Atlanta.. that will cut VERY HEAVILY into UG and GT. Something that they (fans/supporters) will definitely not want.

But its something that is very possible given time and how large your university is... and they probably see it possibly happening. And are pissed.
We havent raise the ire of GT and UGA yet. Not on their radar. But GA Southern fans spend all of their free time taking potshots at everything we do and our big ambitions. Not to mention CAA fans who have a 'Just who the heck do you think you are using us as a pit stop" attitude. I think we're supposes to have a "gee golly we're just happy to be here and we sure would love to stay FCS for about 25 years..." attitude.

No ridicule. Even in the mid-90s when football was approved, USF was a school of > 30,000 students. It was fully expected that the program would quickly move from IAA to IA in a short period of time.
Its all good. Today is a great day in Atlanta. Naysayers are quiet

I am sure the "Big 3" of Florida don't like us rising in football. But, it can currently work if you can fit with NCCA procedures. The more severe opposition we face is actually in our own state legislature. A special UF fan (JD Alexander) almost cut 58% of our state funding (which would have pushed us behind I think even FAMU), and is in the process of taking one of our campuses away from us. State politics is where you really need to be prepared.

Good luck Georgia State, developing your football program. I would like USF to have a friend in the state of Georgia to play more often.
04-cheers
I am surprised we're making it to FBS this quickly without the usual "BullDawg" political maneuvering. I think we snuck up on everyone. I am sure the subtle opposition will begin now

What I have learned from experience, is that state funding conflicts are where the opposition removes its ostensibly friendly mask. Several people siding with UF are trying to hurt us, even though our success benefits the whole state. That is how they attack you-not publicly in a direct but limited football way in the national spotlight. Rather subtle, more damaging, and little media coverage of even their unofficial advocates' dirty deeds.

It's an uphill run, but I have faith GSU can reach at least mid-major status.
This is what I fear as our move to the Sun Belt and FBS next year coincides with our Centennial celebration and the unveiling of our University Master Plan which if fully enacted will transform GSU and Downtown Atlanta forever. Would hate to see the BOR cut it out of spite.

If you want to see how bad things are, our Governor, Rick Scott-who shouldn't even have a dog in the fight, has signed a bill to
make one of our campuses independent immediately-even though it lacks accreditation and was on a path toward independence anyways. We now have 6 filler universities to dilute 4 top-tier (by the unofficial standards of the state) ones and two reliable developing schools in southeast Florida. This move was clearly out of spite.
Luckily the next Chancellor of the University System of Georgia earned his B.A. and M.B.A. from GSU. That should work in our favor.
