I can just see him sitting in his office this week and saying "Fvuck this, I'm outta here."
Kansas fans are pretty despondent. However, I think they're overreacting.

It is disheartening that such a high-profile AD didn't have a vision to go forward.

And you are over commenting given your knowledge base.
He was powerless. Expansion is in the hands of the university presidents. KU's president (chancellor, in this case), screwed the pooch. She was on vacation in Europe when the Big 12 presidents had their original meeting, during which the first rumor broke on Orangebloods.com and things went to hell.

The Kansas AD is getting the hell away from this mess and the poor leadership of the chancellor. He could have warned her something might happen, but if she didn't listen or dismissed it as too unlikely, what's he going to do?
Shouldn't the Lawrence Journal of all places know it's the 'University of Kansas', not 'Kansas University'?
JHG, it's KU...as in "Rock Chalk Jay-hawk KU"

Yes, and it's the University of Kansas, not Kansas University.

Colorado likes to call themselves CU but they are the University of Colorado.
I went to the University of Kansas and the locals occasionally say "Kansas University", but not too often. Of course, they ALWAYS say "KU" and NEVER say "U of K" or "UK". It's an old Big Eight tradition: MU, NU, OU, and CU; all "Universities of" but never called "U of <letter>". One tidbit: I once remember a game long ago against Michigan and the local announcer constantly referring to the Wolverines as"MU".

Yes, I'm well aware, but it stands for the University of Kansas.

KU=University of Kansas
OU=University of Oklahoma, not Oklahoma University
CU=University of Colorado, not Colorado University
NU=University of Nebraska, not Nebraska University

This article says Kansas University, which is incorrect.

You missed one, MU=University of Missouri. Must be a Big 12 thing, or at least it was.
One from the Sun Belt: DU = University of Denver.

His job. This is a challenge. The guy's old and soft. He knows how to spend money and get (questionable) results...he doesn't know how craft something from scratch.

Frankly, this conference isn't even broken up yet. They've had two defections so far, and no-one is positive on the dates.

Second, this is a grand opportunity, even assuming the "worst". These teams are part of a conference that owns the rights to the names "Big 8" and "Big 12". Who knows, they may own the rights to "Southwest Conference" as well.

They've got flagship universities, and teams with long traditions.

They also have rights to a BCS bid and a March Madness bid. They are not dead in the water by any means.

The only problem right now are the unknowns. Too many of them. But, they can go forward with some ideas:

Start with KU, KSU, ISU. You may have Mizzou and Baylor, stay humble and make it welcome for them if they stay.

Contact Memphis. They'd be quick to jump to a new conference. Start working out details of what it takes for them to change.

Contact L'ville and Cincy. Sit down early, and start making a pitch. They might not be so quick to jump, but if you work the numbers, they might see more revenue in a new "Big 8" than in the gigantic Big East. They also may be looking for stability, w/ rumors that the ACC will pursue Big East teams, and they know they're not on that short list.

In short, this is exactly what a good AD should be ready to handle. Not just paying large contracts to coaches.

I think you're spot on, Torch. Worse yet, this just such a cowardly, gutless time to do this. Even if you were asleep at the switch, you don't bail on the school when the whole thing is about to go down. You roll up your sleeves and try to put the university in the best possible position to move forward.
I don't understand the slams against the Kansas AD. He's not retiring until the fall of 2011.....that's well over a year away. He is not hiding from this conference situation, plus the President and board is really the people that have the say in conference changes and stuff. KU's AD is old and retiring. He gave over a year notice. He's not running away or resigning.
Maybe it had to do with that ticket scandal.

Lew could have been described as old when he left UConn to be the AD at Kansas. I agree with Nowicki on this. Nothing unusual here. Perhaps he ends up somewhere else, but I'd guess he's retiring.
I understand, but the timing is crappy. Wait until the dust settles. It's just really bad timing.

Exactly.
Why is it bad timing? It would be bad timing if he said he was retiring as of July 1, 2010. The guy is not retiring until the fall of 2011. All of these conference moves we are seeing right now will already be completed. Nebraska, Colorado, and Boise State are the three that have already announced moves, and all three will already be playing in their new conferences by the time this guy retires.

It actually makes perfect sense to what he is doing. He will help see Kansas into a new conference, while there is plenty of notice to find his replacement, and that replacement will get to take over with a bit of a fresh start with Kansas in a new conference.
