-- Summary --

Graham Watson at ESPN breaks down the teams as follows

Bank on it: Temple, NIU, Ohio, Kent
Most Likely: Toledo
Outside Shot: CMU, WMU
Better Luck Next Year: Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Miami, Ball State, EMU

I'll stick to her convention and fill in for four of the MAC's five bowl games (Bank on it) Assume that they get their fifth tie in (Most Likely), the teams who may either beat out the most likely team or back into an at large (outside shot), and then those with little hope of making a bowl.

It's hard to disagree with NIU and Temple bowling, or some of the lower tier teams not bowling. Initially I did not think Kent belonged in the 'Bank on it' category but the more I look at the flashes the more I realized that for them to not go bowling would constitute a monumental failure. Ohio, on the other hand, may not be as much a given as everyone thinks they are.

My 'Rankings' Are:

Bank on it: Temple, NIU, Kent, Toledo
Most Likely: Ohio
Outside Shot: CMU, Buffalo, Bowling Green
Better Luck Next Year: Akron, WMU, Miami, Ball State, EMU

-- why I ranked them where I ranked them --
Graham Watson, needs to stick to what she does best; namely, eating "Graham Crackers."
Ohio has gradually built depth in its program. That is going to be the difference over most of the MAC competition this fall regardless of how well the quarterback position goes.

2005- Frank's first season. Bobcats go 4-7 with a surprise win against Pitt at home (Wanny's first season) but are blown out otherwise in Non-Conference play.

2006- Bobcats go 7-2 in the MAC. This can be attributed to over achieveing with a steady senior QB and McRae senior year. There was more talent on the roster than 2005 but again the record should have been 6-6.

2007- Bobcats do go 6-6 with 3 very close losses. This is the first season where the passing game really got going under Solich and there was noticiable talent improvement on the field. For instance in 2005 the bobcats lost 45-0 vs. VT while the game in 2007 was close until the 4th quarter.

2008- Bobcats go 4-8 on a brutal schedule that features 6 out of the first 8 on the road. Despite the overall record, Ohio was only down 19-14 with 5 minutes to play at Ohio State. Again a few close losses kept Ohio out of a bowl game.

2009- Bobcats go 7-2 again in the MAC. Ohio's WR Taylor Price goes on to become the highest MAC draft pick in the 2010 draft. Ohio leads the country in takeaways ahead of Texas and Ohio State. The Bobcats fall just short of winning the MAC Champ or bowl game.

2010- Bobcats have 2 preseason all americans on defense. The MAC schedule is very light in the East with schools rebuilding and EMU, Toledo the crossover games. The non-conference has 3 winnable games.

The Bobcats are in a bowl with 6 wins this season. It would be a complete disaster to win anything less than 6 with the schedule the way it is and in Frank's 6th year in Athens.

Glad you have UConn beating us. We'll be out for blood this year after those last two BS losses to UConn.

Toledo dumped during the middle of the season mainly because Opelt
who was nationally Top 5 in Total Offense had a rotator cuff tear.
Hard to lose that Senior leadership and production. Rockets take the RS off Dantin and he gets injured. Pasquale also has a shoulder injury and couldn't really pass effectively. UT was now down to a Pro Style QB running their spread. Hard to win with a marginal defense under those circumstances
Good luck to the MAC trying to cover the Rocket receiving corp this season. UT has a returning Freshman All-American WR(Page), a Robert
Meachem clone that was ranked as high as the #7 WR in the nation his Senior year(Green), a HS All-American(Scott), and a couple of speedy Freshman WR's Reedy and McDowell( just ran a 10.54 100m in the Florida state regionals).
Jr. RB Morgan Williams only ran for about 500 yds as a backup last season, but ran for over 1,000 yds as a Freshman parttime starter and set the Toledo single game rushing record. Lots of depth at RB for UT.
Also, look for a bigger, stronger, faster Rocket Defense this season.
Lots of redshirting on Defense last season. Talented JUCO's and Big Ten transfers have made this a better defense than the past few seasons.

I don't know how much Toledo's defense will improve, but if they stay healthy they should be much better. We have a safety that transferred in from Iowa and did his sit out year last year. Diauntae Morrow. He played quite a bit for Iowa as a freshman before transferring. We have a JUCO transfer at cornerback, Taikwon Paige, that originally signed with Auburn over several BCS offers. Our other starting cornerback will be Desmond Marrow, back from injury after missing the last 1 1/2 years. He had two INT's in the spring game and seems to be back to the form he was before the injury. We've added some other prep school and JUCO talent at LB and DL, to go along with several players that redshirted last year and were highly regarded. We've also got a couple of incoming recruits that could make an impact as true freshman.

I remember in 2004 Toledo had one of the worst defenses in the country, and then in 2005 UT jumped to about mid-pack in the country. I think we could do something very similar. If Austin Dantin improves upon his freshman year, remember he threw for over 300 yards in his last game at BG, the offense is going to be pretty good. Toledo just might surprise some people this fall.

Toledo, with Opelt all season, is a MAC West contender and defnitely in a bowl.
Defense just had to keep the score under 40 and let the offense perform.
