Rick Villarreal contract

I should be able to get a hold of a copy of Rick Villarreal's new contract in the next day or so, but I do have the last deal he signed. I am sure it's all done, but it takes a while to run requests through the proper channels.

Villarreal's last five-year extension came down the pipe back in August of 2007. Villarreal is pulling down $197,200 in base salary, plus incentives for what you would expect -- teams winning championships and athletes doing well in the classroom.

Plus, he gets a pretty sweet Lexus SUV in which to cruise around Denton.

There is nothing to prevent Villarreal from bolting for another job if a better one came around, but for all intents and purposes UNT has locked up another one of its key coaches/officials.

Johnny Jones signed a new deal not too long ago and now Villarreal has a long-term contract as well.

Whether you agree with everything Villarreal has done or not -- and let's be honest, no one ever agrees with everything anyone has done while running an organization as big as a Division I athletic department -- it's impossible not to appreciate what he has accomplished.

UNT is building a new football stadium, has been to the NCAA Tournament twice in the last four years in basketball and is set to face Tulsa in the NCAA tennis tournament tomorrow.

The football program is struggling, but very few schools ever have it going in every program across the board at once.

Villarreal was already in a position of power with the football stadium becoming a reality after being talked about and promised for what seems like forever. The contract extension only strengthens his position heading into what will be an interesting year with head football coach Todd Dodge under the gun, the Mean Green playing its last season at Fouts Field and Jones becoming an increasingly intriguing coaching candidate for openings at big-time schools.
Hey, Greenie,

Good for Villereal and all, but I think he does not get this extension had he not put Dodge on the plank for the coming season. He was the one who hired him, right?

I agree UNT is on the mend for all sports, but in football, Dodge is the anchor weighing you down. There is enough talent in DFW to get UNT at least competitive in the SBC. Dodge is either not getting it or not molding it well.

Looks like Rick managed to get well clear of Dodge before he lights the fuse to blow up the staff. With all that said, good luck to the Mean Green until Troy gets to Denton.
