That can happen in a public, private or home schooling situation. Of course, you want to bring in a few isolated examples to "show" that public education "bad" and "home schooling" is good. Not sure if you were home schooled or what type of school you went to but it is obvious that it failed in its goal of educating you.

That was a charter school, not a public school. If you ask me, more students need to get the beat down like this....

Is it just me, or do (private) charter schools in Texas seem highly corrupt attempts to take state $$ and offer nothing in return?

True in some cases i45, but KIPP is a prime example of "getting it done"

Early this year I read a story about ProVision, a charter school in Houston. Very commendable.

I should've qualified my statement as indicating that some are just child-care mills. The news story up here indicates that this teacher has been fired, but will not lose her teacher's license because she never had one.

I was half-listening to an interview with Bill White (Texas gubernatorial candidate) or someone associated with him where someone indicated where they talked about getting a call from a girl who was a Katrina refugee and was happy because she would get her high school diploma from a charter school - they had her take a test where they gave her the questions before hand along with the answers.

I think the way that Texas monitors/certifies charter schools, it is prone to abuse and is often abused. That isn't to say that it can also provide successes, but it seems to me that a high percentage should be shut down and/or administrators jailed for fraud.

Ohio has many of the same issues with their Charter Schools, I45. I've read about some of them being nothing but training facilities for athletes... specifically basketball players. They do nothing but practice basketball, take little to no classes... borderline "prep" schools for kids who can't get through their HS.

I don't know about the charter schools but government of Texass seems like a highly corrupt attempt to take federal money and offer nothing in return except for the threat to succede(personally, I think the US should just let Texass go on their own).

Many teachers at some of the best private schools don't either. Again, its the people, not the license.

There are two things that Texas does better in preparing students than whatever collective you grew up on. One is spelling.
