Okay, that's 5 denials, one from every principal involved. For some of you, I suppose that proves it's a done deal. 01-wingedeagle

Just an interesting thought. Have we heard anything from the Big East and Rutgers yet.
Here is what the original article stated:

The Big Ten Conference has extended initial offers to join the league to four universities including Missouri and Nebraska from the Big 12, according to multiple sources close to the negotiations.

While nothing can be approved until the Big Ten presidents and chancellors meet the first week of June in Chicago, the league has informed the two Big 12 schools, Notre Dame and Rutgers that it would like to have them join.

This means that "officially" the Big Ten hasn't offered anyone, and won't until after the first week of June, if then. Doesn't mean the rest of the reporting is incorrect at all--they are all telling the truth that the Big Ten hasn't "officially" invited them.
True, that was pointed out to me by Wedge. These are not "formal" offers. ND officals stated they have not received a formal offer.
This is actually somewhat newsworthy:

"Notre Dame has received information from the Big Ten regarding the potential financial impact of joining the conference, one source said. While Notre Dame has been in communication with the Big Ten regarding the league’s expansion efforts, no formal offer has been extended."

It goes in line with what others have said in this thread. Schools must apply to the Big Ten before they can get voted on by the university presidents to be formally invited (and that won't happen until June). The thing is that the Big Ten asking them to consider applying to the conference (which would be in conjunction with receiving financial information about joining the conference) is not a "formal offer" but a fairly good indication that they're going to be invited if they actually do apply. I'm a fairly skeptical person about a lot of these stories and who knows if this particular story today is true, but I believe that the 4 schools that may or may not have been invited are right in line with what the Big Ten wants to do. It is perfectly plausible to me that these 4 schools were asked to apply to the Big Ten and had received key financial information (which ND seems to have received), which allows all parties to deny that any offers have been extended and it would technically be the truth.

Reporters aren't asking the correct question - they keep asking whether a school has been invited. The correct question is whether or not a school has been asked to apply for membership in the Big Ten.

BINGO!
Maybe ND will go to the Pac-10 lol.

Back in 1959, there was something that the pac-10 commissioner wanted to create a super conference called the Airplane conference, he wanted to add the 3 service academies and Notre Dame to the Pac.
could the 5th school waiting for the other 4 to accept, be Texas? They could then tell the state leg., sorry there isnt any room for A&M we have to go alone? 05-stirthepot

The folks on this board who seem desperate to debunk this story are either fans of a scool who they they thought were a lock for the Big 10 and aren't or CUSA fans who were hoping for 3-4 Big East members would leave in order to force the BE into a super expansion mode.
Not entirely true. This rumor is debunk because its simply not true. In 6-7 months these just might be the teams actually invited. Hell at this point it seems like these 3 are the most logical. So its time for Pitt Admin to start working on making the Big East an even better conference.

Several reports were that, led by Louisville, WVU, Cincy, and USF, attempts were made to do exactly what you're speaking of. Rutgers,Syracuse and Pitt did not want to participate.
