Sounds like one of the Marshall guys on this board penned that article. You can almost feel the venom toward UCF in the article. Thank goodness there are actually educated folks responsible for making decisions and not some tool who writes for a rag in West Virginia!!

I'm puzzled as to where the hate comes from. I could understand it IF the writer was from the Greenville, NC paper...

I don't think the guy's slant is confined to only a "Marshall" angle.......just because he's in WV doesn't mean his opinion is ONLY coming from a Huntington, perspective.......03-idea

Den, you read the CUSA boards...The Marshall folks literally HATE UCF, and have no desire to hide it...It's almost comical at times. I appreciate good rivalries, but some of them take things to a new level.

On the article, I agree you guys are primed to move up, but so are Memphis and UCF. Of course, it's all dependent on on how the dominoes fall, and there is a good chance we could all be left on the outside when the dust clears. I just don't see the Big Ten going to 16 right away (I personally think they are going to save a spot for Notre Dame for down the line), 14 is the number they'll go to...Which in turn means at most 2 Big East schools go.

I would venture a guess that the Big East has a contingency plan in place, and that UCF is already in the mix. Admittedly, a lot of that is tied to "homerism," but our name being mentioned by AD's and coaches make me believe that something is already in the works. I agree with the concerns of posters here from the current Big East schools that would be left behind. Both UCF and ECU have some catching up to do on the football field (Memphis, no disrespect, but you have more than catching up to do on the football field, basketball court is another story). I'm pretty confident that it will not take UCF long to compete in the conference. We've already started establishing some nice recruiting channels into South Florida (the real South Florida, not West-Central Florida 05-stirthepot) and fans would be pretty excited to consistently see teams like WVU, Louisville, Cincy, UConn, Syracuse and USF visiting BHNS.
Doug Smock for President!!!!!

Just opinions, thats all it is. Just like the rest of us on here. I have ECU in the top 5 but most certainly not the #1 option. Basketball is to bad for it to be #1. When it comes down to it, basketball would play a big factor if the Big East survives. Dont kidd yourselves.
Good read, UCF is doomed, and ECU is a god.
I posted with NO comment / opinion. I'm simply curious as to why would a WV paper even bother?
He doesn't even have his criteria right as to how and why a school gets admitted into a better conference. Oh well. If you're an ECU fan, it's great read. If not, meh...

Here is another article from Smock from earlier in the year...He's not a big UCF fan (to say the least)

Another Smock Article

Quotes Like:
If Conference USA had an All-Whine Team, Rompza might merit three spots. This guy is about 2.8 percent talent, 97.2 percent bad attitude. Back in the "golden age" of the Marshall student section, those lovable '80s, the 5-foot-9 sophomore would have been the perfect target.

Well, the Knights can play a little defense, even when they're not mugging you.
What about the hate on Memphis, Houston & UTEP?
The writer makes a decent case against Memphis joining the Big East, but his argument is extremely weak when it comes to UCF. Whereas he points out Memphis' shortcomings in football, his rant against UCF seems to be more of a "I personally don't like you" type argument rather than a "your program has these shortcomings".

Also, the writer seems to take a very harsh tone towards UCF but is much more conciliatory when talking about Marshall (who, IMO, is probably 4th or 5th on the list of schools that the Big East would realistically take).
I like ECU as a 9th because it gets the Big East into another market and makes a natural rival for UCF.

The Big East seems to be pretty high on UCF though because of its potential. I can definitely see a couple scenarios where they get into the BE.

Based on what I've read from reports and know from the last time the BE was looking at as far as candidates here is how I would rank them:

1. UCF (finalist last time around, now has better facilities)
2. Memphis (big time basketball along with Liberty Bowl)
3. Temple (now has a solid football team)
4. East Carolina (has the football fanbase, liability in bb)
5. TCU (a possibility if the BE is desperate to keep the BCS bid)
6. Buffalo (great academics, needs to work on athletics)
7. Marshall (has a 40,000 facility and close to WVU, UL, UC)
8. UMass (could be a player if first invited as a bb only school)

As we can see there are plenty enough good candidates for the Big East to reload again an obtain a BCS bid depending on how many schools are taken.
Reads like he came out of the North Bubbmlef*uck branch of the DeVry School of Sports Consulting. He speaks just as a football fan, not a sports consultant. He's not impressed by Fed Ex's deep pockets and willingness to support Memphis? As poor as Memphis has performed on the field their football budget is $8.3 Mil. That would tell a real consultant they have the resources for a BCS move, but need other things to come together.
' Wrote:Let's start with you folks at the University of Memphis. You're the best argument against the concept of an all-sports conference. The Tigers' basketball program should be admitted to the SEC today, as its hoops pedigree and NCAA compliance history is a perfect fit.

This line was classic.

The thing is, we don't need another market. We have all the market we will ever need. We need to increase market share. I actually prefer adding teams within the footprint to strengthen market share. The only problem is there are none available. Adding teams far away from our big markets is not the best idea, IMO, unelss it is the only option (which might be the case). That said, I thought I'd have some fun with your list, and give my thoughts if anyone cares...

3. UCF - Potential to devlop into a player. Would be drafted on potential
2. Memphis - basketball is oh so important, and they have great presence in their market. May have potential for football if in a real conference due to recruiting grounds
1. Temple - adds a team already in the footprint, who brings basketball as well. Great combination in my opinion. Plus they can either improve their football, or they can give away a few wins to WVU, Lou, and Cincy.
4. East Carolina - Most ready football wise. Not sure how much it helps TV wise in the middle of ACC territory.
5. TCU - Would be great to add, but is it a win-win situation? Too many negatives for TCU to accept?
6. Buffalo - unknown to me. However, I think it is unreasonable to think you can replace Syracuse with them
7. Marshall - 10 years too late
8. UMass - No need for more basketball schools. However, if we did expand the basketball side as well, they would be number 1 or number 2 (Xavier)

ECU's beaten UCF the last 2 years in men's hoops, so what's that make UCF? 03-wink...
