I do have a couple of updates...

New Years' Eve- DVD/NF- Was the wife's pick for the evening. Never saw it or Valentine's Day. For a chick flick kinda movie, it wasn't half bad. Not one I'd own.

Lone Survivor- DVD/NF- I'm a huge Marcus Luttrell supporter. I heard about him on a hunting show he did. Researched him and bought the book a couple years back. Read the book in a couple of days. I was geeked when I heard they were doing a movie. Via his FB I saw where he consulted on the movie. Great book and good movie. I think the actors portrayed the actual servicemen in the best way they could. Of course there were a couple of Hollywood type scenes. But that's why it was based on a true story. If you haven't seen it, I encourage you to. I will be buying this one before I read Luttrell's book "Service".

The Internship- HBO or Showtime- It was a free weekend so I recorded this movie. I've seen it before, but it was definitely better the 2nd time. There's no elaborate plot. Just a few good laughs at the exploits of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- Amazon Prime- Oh how many years has it been since I last watched this classic, and how many lines did I still recall.. Still holds up a wee bit. And with the reboot coming, it was worth watching again.

TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze- BR- So I enjoyed my trip down memory lane with the first one, I bought all 3 on BR. I didn't quote lines like out of the first one, but there were things I noticed that I didn't as a kid. Take out the scene with Vanilla Ice, and it holds up. Go ninja go ninja go.

Up on deck:
A Good Day to Die Hard
Valentine's Day
Monument Men
Chasing Mavericks
W.
Lincoln (for a second time)
Munich

and keeps you entertained. This is by no means one among the best baseball movies (ie. Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, etc.) but it is a decent family flick that is worthy to see.

best baseball films? it is sacrilege, but i haven't seen bull durham nor the natural

top five

1- sandlot
2- field of dreams
3- major league
4- bad news bears
5- league of their own

of course ken burns' nine innings inclusion simply isn't fair. got that for my pops for this past christmas, though i wanted it for myself

Next chance you get watch Bull Durham - a classic! The first Major League movie is a classic as well.

On a different note...watch Slap Shot with Paul Newman if you haven't seen it. Now that is a funny take on minor league hockey!
Not a hockey fan, but I worked with a guy from ND that was. He lent me Slap Shot. I now own it..

"They brought their f'n toys!"
"Well at least they're not playing with themselves!"

On hockey movies....

never seen slap shot but...

Miracle ( about the 1980 Olympics) was great. I got that on dvd.

I always though the first Might Ducks was pretty legit for a movie.

On baseball movies...

I like Major League and Field of Dreams. Angels in the Outfield was pretty good as I remember. I've only seen Bull Durham once.... and just don't remember enough to speak on it.

@ Lone Survivor
--I thought it was good as far as realism and what not...BUT... it took them way to long to get to the end game of the movie.

@ Old School TMNTs
--have the dvd box set. While 2 didn't do much for me, I did like I and III.

@ A Good Day to Die Hard
--I like the set up of the movie and the action...but it kind of felt it was Bruce Willis cashing in so to speak.

@ Monuments Men
--I want to see that one

@ Lincoln
--I thought it was pretty good.

@ Munich
--I thought it was pretty good.
Some scenes from Slap Shot may not be suitable for all audiences...

If you thought that it took too long for LS, don't read the book. The first few chapters deal with Luttrell and what led him to be a SEAL and the training involved. The mission took a few chapters as well.
I got a couple more..

Valentine's Day-- DVD/NF-- watched with the wife. Her pick (it was her birthday). Not too bad. I preferred the other one.

Metallica's Through the Never- NF Stream-- Basically it was one big Metallica concert with a side story. Very little dialogue. Not bad if you're Metallica fan.

Hit and Run-- NF Stream-- Not the best movie I've ever streamed but not the worst. It had some good moments and some cheesy moments. I'd watch it again if I had to.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit / BR
--I like Chris Pine in the role. I actually thought the casting was pretty good. I kind of liked some of the background stuff about before he got into the CIA. Overall, a solid entry in the series. I still think Patriot Games is my favorite.

RoboCop / BR
--The NEW ONE. I liked how they did it. I liked the plot twists and intrigue and the action was a major upgrade from the stop motion of the original trilogy. About the only thing I disliked about it was some of the elements like the tv commercials or Murphy/Lewis relationship were kind of different....not bad but not different.

Talladega Nights / dvd
--I live this movie, one of my favorite Will Ferell movies.

The Thomas Crown Affair/ dvd
--Pretty good movie IMO. I liked the casting and the acting. As a heist movie though, I did enjoy a few others more.

Maleficent / theater
--Hmmm I enjoyed the previously done Snow White and thought this would be similar. It kind of was/is but, its story line compared to the Disney Sleeping Beauty. Interesting motivational choices for her, the King, and how they reason out here awakening.
I watched "A Million Ways to Die in the West" yesterday. It's a riot.

There were way too many modern expressions in the movie. But that's a minor detail.

Which version? The Pierce Brosnan/Rene Russo remake is one of my all-time favorites. That being said, I can't look at that movie and not want to immediately upgrade my wardrobe.

how close is it to another "Ted" or "Family Guy/ American Dad" rip off of humor?

It's actually pretty original, especially the part about the guy who's engaged to the prostitute. She's screwing everyone in town, except him. They're Christians, and want to save that for after they're married.
Mr. Mom- NF DVD- Never seen it. Watched it this weekend. Not too bad for the era in which it was made.

22 Jump Street- Theater- So if you liked the first one, you'll like it. To me it wasn't as funny as the first one, although it had it's moments. Channing Tatum actually had some of the funniest scenes.

Monuments Men- NF DVD- Not a great overall WWII movie. But it was good. Not one I'd go out and buy, but could watch again.

I saw Ted a few weeks ago, HBOHD (from DVR). I was surprised how much like a Family Guy episode it was.

It definitely had its moments ("Is that my ringtone? It sounds so negative." "It's from the notebook.") but I was a little underwhelmed. I thought there would be a little more creativity.

I liked it. It was pretty good. But my expectations were set too high.

You got to admit the scene where Ted says: I do not sound like Peter Griffith.. Was kinda funny. That and the whole Flash Gordon party.

Sure. And the end where Ted pretended to be mentally challenged b/c John put the stuffing in wrong.

I thought it was a stupid movie, and couldn't watch more than 10 minutes of it. I have no idea why people think it's a good movie. There hasn't been a well written movie out of Hollywood in decades. It's all special effects, poor writing, and a lot of bad acting. Sure there are some good actors. But there are more bad actors than there are good ones.

I guess stupid would depend on what you wanted to get out of it. I thought they did the concept pretty well. IMO, they kind of over did the drugs/alcohol part. Otherwise, it was pretty good. I also think they focused too much on the Flash Gordon angle. That said, when they make Ted 2 I am interested to see what the improved upon. IMO, Ted was like if Teddy Ruxpin had a Eddie Murphy Raw tape put in instead of his normal story telling tapes.

That is because almost nobody in Hollywood has come up with an original thought for decades. They keep trying to recycle the same old 01-rivals. The ideas are mostly from comic books they enjoyed as a kid. The original thinkers making movies are animators, and even that is going downhill.

IMO the guys who made Idiocracy were far more prophetic than they ever thought they'd be. Humanity is getting stupider by the minute, and it shows in most of the movies.

the problem with this line of thinking is, it brushes aside the large amount of quality material coming out on other mediums. The golden age of cinema happened because creative writers had very few outlets for that creativity. With today's technology and variety of ways to release TV shows, we see more and more talented writers going that route and creating epic programming.

The golden age of cinema has ended, but we're right smack in the middle of the golden age of television. Sure, comedies are dwindling, but every other TV genre is showing incredible depth. No longer are we forced to get our TV fix from the major networks. There's great programming on USA, TNT, AMC, History channel, Hulu, Netflix, Cinemax, HBO, Starz, Showtime, FX, etc.

I look at shows like Vikings and Game of Thrones and I see movies that are basically spread out over 10 episodes a year.

And that's just television! What about the creative people writing for video games? I'm not a gamer, but from what I can tell, today's games are fully immersive experiences, with well-thought out plots and snappy dialogue.

So yes, cinema has been declining for years and is currently at its nadir, but that creativity isn't gone, it's just moved to other mediums.

*I do however, agree that society as a whole is dumber and despite the proliferation of travel opportunities, appears to have less perspective. Young people who used to have summer jobs, are now over-scheduled zombies, whose life purpose seems to be getting into a good college. No longer are those kids meeting people who aren't like them.
