Darius Willis, Albert Sparks, and Matt Hornbuckle all left the UB Football program today.

"We are very disappointed when players quit, we all are, it's not what I want in our program. Here's the other thing: We will not leave this program up to the weak, timid and non-committed." -- Coach Jeff Quinn

This makes at least six players who have left the program, already gone are Zach Maynard, Nick Sizemore, and Rich Perez (I may be missing someone). So far Maynard is the only starter to leave the program.
Well, losing that many players WILL leave your program toady. And a toady program is not something any of us want to see in the MAC-I mean we already have Eastern and Ball! 03-wink
intresting quote ... no? I can understand the non-commited... but timid and weak? ouch
What's the story here?

Quinn is being tough making guys earn it, and making it his program. Maynard might have stayed if Danny Barrett were named HC, then he wanted a guarantee from the new staff he would start. They were smart to balk. Our new Spread meant Sizemore was not needed for FB and was forced to develop for Center. Out he goes. The others were not happy when UB released their summer 2 deep. If they were not willing to work to move up, goodbye and good luck.
Sounds like a CYA reaction to mass defections which he perceives may reflect badly on him. A head coach should know better. Move on and don't call any more attention to it. Following on the heels of a popular coach who did not have these problems, these are dumb comments that will do nothing to help him with future recruits. Coaches should be above this kind of petty sniping.
Sometimes this happens when a new head coach comes in. He makes the players lives a living hell to weed out anyone who might have been coasting under the previous head coach. But that usually is only necessary when the last coach was fired for not performing. It's not really something you need to do when the team you're taking over just had one of the best several-year runs in school history.

Maybe he wants to open up scholarships to recruit more of "his guys", whom he will then show favoritism to.
sure if this was TG a few years ago.. fine. but buffalo is cleary not a program in shambles. more to my point if he said "we move on with those commited to the program""I won't speak about players who have choosen to leave"... i think he may have been better served...
I read Urban Meyer's book recently. The chapter on BG talks about the instilling of winning attitude/great work ethic, the defections and finally the victories that followed. Sounds like a few more will follow the defectors at UB and things will eventually stabilize.
Turner Gill won the MAC with many of those players. Most college coaches come to town talk tough no matter how much the players had won before. He has to show 20 year olds he is boss. Hey Quinn, the kids figured that out before the first work out.

Say What?

Maynard played like six plays the year UB won the MAC
Sizemore and Perez were in High School
Willis was ineligible to play
Hornbuckle and Sparks were freshman this season
Much ado about nothing. There is always turnover with a new HC taking over a program. Sounds to me like the UB situation is fewer players departing than normally could be expected.

According to an article in the Det News, EMU has had 39 players depart from the team since the end of the season. For sure they are counting the seniors who are out of eligibility, but that is a huge turnover...and English is in his second year, not the first.

Shep on UBFan (one of the True Blue co-founders) was kind enough to post the names of the players who left when Gill Came on board:

Brad Beggs, Joe Cerminara, Phillip Warren, Ekah Ibekweh, Dwayne Reid, DeSean Larmond, Travis Coughlin, Ted Rene, Frankie Pointer, James Torres, Josh Eagon, James Goss, Gerald Jackson, Andre Evans, Brevon Williams, Derek Newell

Warren was the going into his junior year as the favorite to take over for the departing half back Steven King
I don't think the turnover is unusual or the news here. The coach implying that those who leave are "weak, timid, or non-committed" is what is causing discussion.

Meyer had puke cans throughout the Perry Field House when the squad was doing its spring drills. He was extremely proud of filling those cans.

He talks about the puke cans. The book is a good one for any college football and MAC fan. The big mystery to Meyer was the group of BG fans that were mad when he left and didn't really appreciate what he had done for the program. If I had to chose between him and Saban, I'd take Urban.
Nick Saban @ Toledo and Urban Meyer @ BG. That is an impressive legacy.

Real big mystery - he tells the newspaper "I'm not going anywhere. We have a lot of work to do." on Tuesday and on Sunday he flies out to sign his Utah contract.

Or the fact that on Saturday he had recruits on-campus and was telling them about what his vision for BG football was, and then he turns around and flies out the next day to sign his Utah contract.

The fact that Urban left BG wasn't what made Falcon fans mad. It was HOW he left BG.

"This is a long term process (building a football program). I always say there are only about eight or 10 really good football programs where year in and year out they win."

He didn't learn from his gaffe at BGSU. He pulled the same stunt at Utah.

"I plan on coaching at Utah next year. There's been no contact made. Period. It's almost comical. We're playing the biggest game in the history of the school and we're talking about that. That's nothing to do with nothing. [Shelley Meyer served her employer 2-weeks notice the next day.]"

I bet Ty Willingham doesn't have Urban on his Christmas card list after he got him canned at Notre Dame (and then spurned the university when they wouldn't bow down to his demands to allow him to recruit players of marginal academic ability).

You want Urban, you can have him. I got tired of his Lou Holtz act. I knew he would be gone from BG before his contract ended. I just figured that since he lost 3 of his final 4 games, that it would be the following year.

It was great that he could beat the BCS teams, but the fact is - beating Missouri and Kansas during the '02 regular season meant absolutely nothing. The losses to Northern Illinois and Toledo meant no bowl game for the Falcons. If we had lost to Missou and Kansas and beaten N. Illinois and Toledo, then we could have gone bowling.

Urban and Moe Ankney never led a Falcon team to a bowl game. That's his BGSU legacy.

Ankney was the one that told Meyer not to let the grass grow under his feet in BG.
