Nice honor, especially nice recognition for a MAC athlete in an area dominated by Michigan and Michigan State:

MOUNT PLEASANT - Former Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour has been selected as the Detroit Athletic Club's Michigan College Athlete of the Year.

LeFevour and Michigan State basketball player Allyssa DeHaan, the female recipient of the award, will be honored at the National Athletic Awards banquet at the Detroit Athletic Club on May 10.

The Michigan College Athlete of the Year award is presented to a college student-athlete who excels academically and athletically, exhibits leadership in the community and on campus and promotes ethical and sportsmanlike behavior.

LeFevour capped one of the most decorated careers in college football history in 2009.

The only player in NCAA history to pass for at least 12,000 yards and rush for at least 2,500 yards in a career, LeFevour ranks second in Bowl Subdivision history in career yards of total offense with 15,853 (12,905 passing, 2,948 rushing).

LeFevour accounted for 150 career touchdowns (102 passing, 47 rushing, one receiving), the most of any player in Bowl Subdivision history. He holds Mid-American Conference career records for total offense, passing yards, touchdown passes, completions (1,171) and attempts (1,763). In Bowl Subdivision history, LeFevour ranks fourth in completions, eighth in touchdown passes and ninth in passing yards.

LeFevour was named the MAC's Vern Smith Leadership Award winner as a senior. He was a two-time MAC Offensive Player of the Year honoree, three-time All-MAC first team selection and four-time Academic All-MAC choice.

LeFevour led the Chippewas to three conference titles in his four seasons as a starter, four bowl game appearances and two bowl victories. CMU was 36-15 in games LeFevour started during his career.

As a senior, LeFevour was named the MAC Championship Game Offensive Player of the Game and the GMAC Bowl Most Valuable Player. He was named the Most Outstanding Player for the North team at the 2010 Senior Bowl after completing 5-of-10 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown and also rushing for a score.

LeFevour graduated from CMU in December 2009 with a bachelor's degree in interpersonal communication. A Dean's List student, LeFevour was a four-time Academic All-MAC selection and two-time CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV second team honoree. He was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, in 2008, and he was named a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-American in 2009.

A two-year team captain, LeFevour assumed the leadership role both within the football program and in the community. He was a regular participant in Recess with the Chippewas, a program that sent CMU football players to area elementary and middle schools. He volunteered with teammates at the Salvation Army Christmas Breakfast during CMU's trips to the Motor City Bowl in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and annually volunteered with fellow CMU student-athletes in the Isabella County Red Cross Canned Food Drive and the State of Michigan Special Olympics Summer Games. Among the other events in which LeFevour volunteered were the Tackling Malaria Youth Football Clinic and the Isabella County Christmas Outreach Program.

The May 10 awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m. Visit the Detroit Athletic Club's website (http://www.thedac.com/public/) for more information.
