We started the "who is UAB's greatest traitor". I wanted to see who you guys thought our greatest ally is.
MAN, That's Easy.......................... It's Larry Langford!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 05-stirthepot
The Late great DePaul legend, Ray Meyer.

His friendship with Gene Bartow gave us #1 teams to play when we were first starting out.

For similar reasons, I would also nominate Sonny Smith, however, Sonny was only trying to hamper Alabama instate recruiting by building up UAB.

Former nominees - Nolan Richardson
Possible future nominee for his friendship to Mike Davis - Charles Barkley. (

Funny how he is considered a traitor and an ally.

Hey MB,
Who was actaully responsible for our beloved Clean Gene coming to UAB? That person would seriously be on the top of the list! But, I also agree with your reasoning about Meyer.
I would have to agree - Ray Meyer was HUGE for UAB in the early days.

Sonny Smith I would put at #2...UAB and Auburn have played in basketball 17 times and once in football...there is no reason UAB and Auburn shouldn't be playing every year in hoops/baseball/etc and at least every few years in football...in time I think it will happen again.

Go Blazers!

S Richardson Hill and Jerry Young were instrumental in getting Bartow to UAB. However, when you are talking about allies, I think you are inferring people who are not a part of UAB.

I guess we could thank John Wooden for being such a tough act to follow.

We already have a large group of young people for whom UAB has been around "their whole lives". Those of us who remember the U of A Extension Center are older folks now, and we sometimes forget how quickly something we think of as new becomes something known and familiar to the young. Todays high school athletes don't think of UAB as new unless they are taught that by fans of older schools. They can't remember when there was no UAB football team. When we get our program grounded in up to date facilities and leadership, we will be the equal of any in the nation, particularly the young.

Add to that those who move to Birmingham from out of state. They tend to support UAB as well (at least the one's that I know).

been steeped in the anti-Jeffco/B'ham emnity that pervades many of those raised in rural/suburban Alabama. Plus since they can get UAB tix for good seats without a premium added on, they may adopt us as a family budget-friendly sports alternative.
