How's this for a stadium ? Coming soon for Allen HIGH SCHOOL

If drawings are any indication, Allen's new football stadium will turn some heads

Construction for Allen's new 18,000-seat high school football stadium is expected to begin this September. And by the looks of it, it's going to be a state-of-the-art facility that will be the envy of Class 5A programs from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond.

In May 2009, voters approved a $119.4 million bond proposal for a new auditorium at Allen High School, new multipurpose stadium and a new service center for maintenance, student nutrition and transportation.

Conceptual drawings of the facility's approved design were recently released, and they should turn some heads. The current Eagle Stadium is known around these parts as being a particularly difficult place for visiting teams to play, as colleague Matt Wixon pointed out two years ago.

When it opens in 2012, will the new stadium reverberate with the same energy as the old one? That's a question some will be pondering from this point forward.
That is extremely unnecessary... What a waste of money.... No wonder students are idiots when they get to college. All the money to buy books and good teachers is going to stadiums like this. 18,000??? Most SBC schools can't get that many into their own stadiums.

Way to go Texas.... My hometown Columbus, GA has the right idea. My high school (Northside HS) opened in 2002 and doesn't even have it's own stadium. Most don't use their stadiums anymore. We all share a fellow high school's stadium (Shaw HS- Kinnett Stadium). Sometimes for special occasions we play at the city stadium (Memorial Stadium) which is near the Columbus Civic Center. That saves a crap ton of money considering there are 7 high schools and like 5-10 private/catholic schools in the city.

The money belongs to the folks/voters that live in Allen so it's their choice. The stadium is not taking money away from books and good teachers so no need for your 03-hissyfit. Allen has a top-notch school system.
Okay congrats to them. It's still a waste of money no matter where it comes from. I don't care if they are National Champions... Would it have killed them to give some to the band? I bet their band has a crap hole band room to practice in and swamp of a field to rehearse on. What about their art, choral, and theatre departments? What about computer labs, science labs, and library? I'm sure everything at this place is top notch because people that support an insane HIGH SCHOOL stadium like that must be living in the lap of luxury when they attend that school.

IMO it's a complete waste of money and extremely bold of them. They should try to join FCS soon. I'm sure they'd be able to take down UNT! 03-lmfao

Allen has elected to stay with one high school instead of building others. Could there be a huge savings there ? How about a high school that has a 638 member marching band ?

And I bet they aren't all that good... Just because you have the numbers doesn't mean your any good. My "little" 90 member band has beat 250 member bands at many high school band festivals. Quality of sound before quantity... Like I said, it is a waste of money. So I'll end my 03-hissyfit fest now. 04-cheers

What is thier average attendance? What do tickets to high school games go for in Texas?

I don't know their actual attendance, but the current stadium seats 14,200 and that includes temporary bleachers that are put up every year. With over 5,000 students and the success of their football program, there will probably be few empty seats.

Check out their athletic program

I don't know their ticket prices, but they probably have a waiting list for reserved seats as do many high schools. Their booster club also kicks in $$$ & they rent their stadium to a professional soccer team. Other venues are also included in the project. Here's a post from gomeangreen.com with the breakdown.

Here is a breakout of estimated costs for capital projects funded by the $119 million

1. 1500 seat Performing Arts Center $23.3 million
2. District Transportation / Student Nutrition Service Center $36.5 million
3. Multipurpose Stadium $59.6 million
Total Projects $119 milion

By comparison UNT's new stadium which will seat 30,000 has an estimated cost of $78 million, but I believe I read that construction costs are lower than anticipated and the cost could be as much as $10 million less than projected. The same may hold true for the Allen stadium (but it's still a nice chunk of change!).
What the heck is a nutruition center? Is that what you call a $36.5 million cafeteria?

That $36.5 also includes the transportation center. (Probably shops, maintenance, dispatching area for district school buses.)

Nah, that's the parking lot/driveway.
I disagree with a lot of my Texas buddies, I think building outlandish facilities for high school programs is a gross misplacement of priorities. The not public money is a bad argument as most often these facilities are funded almost entirely by bonds that end up being paid more by taxpayers than additional revenues generated. If you want to look at priorities, why have a high school of over 5000 students. Although they will offer up a lot of reasons, the primary rationale is to have a mammoth student body to field superior athletic teams. Because of the intense competition a lot of would be athletes will never get much more than scant opportunity to play at the varsity level.

I think the arms race in college athletics is incredibly stupid, but at the high school level it is almost criminal. The Allen School District is one of the wealthiest in Texas, but the vast majority of schools in Texas are underfunded and don't have the tax basis to generate satisfactory academic resources.

I agree with my friend from Troy. Too much for a high school - aren't there other civic projects in Allen that could use some of that money? Why not build permanent seating where the temporary seating goes at a tiny fraction of the cost and use other funds elsewhere?

The only problem with this idea is that it removes the ability to gloat. 03-banghead
Hmmm. Certain folks moaning and groaning about Allen High's new facilities that will include a football stadium. Money could be better spent, etc. Same folks whoopin it up over the new basketball arena they are building that cost how many million ? Since you can't fill your existing arena, couldn't you just slap some paint on it and use these millions for more worthy projects ? Interesting that others get knocked, but if it's for you it gets raves.

Kudo's to the Allen voters for approving funding for the school complex that THEY want. Same to you for approving and building what YOUR school wants. What's good for one, should be good for all ! If it's YOUR money, YOU make the decisions on how it is spent05-stirthepot
