Erwin, take note.

Please take note that it happened in Kingsport, Erwin was just closest place they had a crane that could hold it.
Also hanging doesn't seem much different then Thomas Edison electrocuting one in New York City.
There is a theatrical play based on this story:

Rod- I have to admit I didn't know the story of Edison before. I looked it up and it really did turn my stomach.

The abuses people gave to animals, and evidently elephants, back then is appalling. Just absolutely appalling.

Still, I would like to mention that Topsy (Edison) had to kill three people before they put her down (with a more humane execution, as sad as it was) and Mary (Erwin-Kingsport) only killed one person- a drifter who was abusive to her (as did Topsy).

Point is, people in east Tennessee are much more uncultured, unthinking, bloodthirsty savages.

But hey, you went to church yesterday so I guess that makes it all okay.
Hey Pennsylvania... where you get off making the wisecrack church statement? Where in all of Christianity does it say its ok to abuse God's creation...? Those familiar with God's revelation the Bible know that man is given dominion over the earth as a steward.

You might do well going to church yourself. I would not want to hear "depart from me I never knew you."
I guess they could have used the European method of dealing with rogue Elephants. Cannon and rifle fusillades, shooting it to pieces.
