HOUSTON - FOX 26 Sports has learned that former Texas Tech University coach James Dickey will be named the next head basketball coach at the University of Houston.
College basketball sources told FOX 26 Sports that Dickey gets a five-year contract from Houston that will pay him between $400,000 and $450,000 a year.

Looks like he's going to end up as an unpaid assistant at Little Rock for another year .
Good thing he was hanging out at UALR this year. Did a lot of good.

Amazing to me that Houston paid him almost half a million dollars a year. I don't think they draw more than us. Also they fire one "old" coach and hire another- Dickie has to be in his late 50's by now.

He was given the option to resign, which he then did.

This was going to be a rebuilding year regardless, but with Mike we probably would have been close to .500. We lost a lot of close games that could have gone the other way with Svelte Mike.

O.K. I'll buy your theory that we might have won a few more games with Mike. But why do we continue to have "rebuilding" years with a regine that's been here seven years. Shouldn't there always be good players in the pipeline that can step in a contribute to a winning team?
We're still ignoring the problem that we have consistently tried to fill in gaps every year with Jucos instead of being able to recruit good high schoolers that stay and become players who can contribute to winning championships in their last couple of years. It's like consistently trying to fix a leaky roof by patching it up instead of replacing the roof. At some point, you've got to bite the bullet and purchase a new roof.

I don't understand why Dickey would be more attractive than "Sweet Tom"? Unless they were going with a young, energetic coach, what are they thinking? Penders took them to the NCAA this year. And he's forced to resign? Maybe there's something non basketball related that figured into this decision that we aren't privy to. That's the only thing I can figure. He had a pretty good record at Houston over the years. I guess those Elvin Hayes, Olajuoun years spoiled them too, just like the Nolan years spoiled Hog fans. Not many programs can sustain that type of success.

Gillispie has supposedly undergone treatment for his alcohol problems, which got him into trouble, so I don't understand why someone wouldn't hire him. He's had great success wherever he's been. Maybe not enough for Kentucky, but that is not a realistic situation. Hell. Tubby Smith won a national championship and they rode him out of town. Maybe he's still drawing nice money from Kentucky and is in a position that he doesn't have to take a job unless it's one he really wants. I'd like to see him get another chance.

Even NC didn't make the NCAA this year with a roster loaded with McDonalds All-Americans. Every program has down years. And for them, with their resources, that was as far down in relative terms as we were this year.

I heard an analyst on the radio the other day talking about how it is inevitable that midmajors will have "down" seasons (okay, I know there are exceptions like Gonzago and Butler, if they are even midmajors). I can't remember the details of what was said, but basically he pointed out that most midmajors will peak when they have a senior laden team and then have a drop-off when those guys graduate. They are just not able to sign "impact" freshman like the BCS schools, but tend to bring in players that need to mature and develop. So it is envitable that they will have more ups and downs than most BCS schools.

So where were all the players we brought in that needed to mature and develop. We have that opportunity every season, and obviously they hadn't developed enough. It will be interesting to see how far down the women's team will fall after next season when all those seniors leave. I would bet that Foley will still have a respectable season the following year since he'll probably have players in the program who can step in without a complete collapse when he loses Chastity, etc. We'll see.
