This stat has been thrown around a lot the past 2 days with UNI going into the round of 16.

Is that accurate? The MAC had 3 or more Sweet 16 teams since the last time the MVC did?

If that's true .. That is something I did not know.

No, SIU, Bradley, and Wichita State have all been to the Sweet 16 recently.
Not even close. UNI is the Valley's eighth Sweet 16 team since 1994. Southern Illinois, in 2007, was the last Valley team to reach the final 16 before the Panthers advanced. I got this from the Valley web site -- Notably, the Missouri Valley has received just 33 total bids from 1994-2010, meaning nearly one of every five Valley NCAA berths since 1994 have resulted in a Sweet 16 trip. (and this was prior to UNI's win).
UNI is the 1st MVC Tournament Champion to advance to the sweet 16 as I understand it.
maybe there was some miscommunication involved with the original statement. i know it's the first time an Ivy League school has been to the Sweet 16 since 1979. perhaps that's what was meant instead of an MVC school?
That's true about the Ivy fact.

That must have been what they were referring to. It must have been tourney champ. I'm certain it was MVC, which made it stick out to me.

Makes sense now.
At first on Saturday, both CBS and ESPN incorrectly stated that UNI was the first Valley team in the Sweet 16 since 1979. As you all know, this obviously is not true. Then to cover up the mistake, sort of, they started saying first MVC champion since 1979.

It's a crappy stat nonetheless, because it sends out the wrong impression anyway. To someone who does not know much about the MVC, saying UNI is the first MVC conference tourney champ to move onto the Sweet 16 can be easily correlated or assumed that UNI is the first MVC team in the Sweet 16 since 1979. I really wish the media outlets would just instead say, UNI is the first Valley team in the Sweet 16 since 2007.
