that and the fact that he doesn't really play defense are just two reasons he should be the second striker if Charlie Davies doesn't recover from his injury.
Here's a cry for help, but Thursday night instead of watching NCAA I watched Women's U17 Concacaf semi between USA and Canada, which USA lost on pk. Canada just packed it in and every chance US got they shot wildly. Oh well.

I only bring this up because the commentators said Charlie Davies has returned to training and will be available for the WC.

June 12.
great news for Davies...

if Davies can get back to form, the US becomes exponentially better (not necessarily good though, but better). Besides Altidore no other US striking option remotely strikes any fear in the opposition. For me, it would have been interesting to see Dempsey up top. He tends to overdribble but he has touch that the other strikers seem to lack. i wouldn't mind if, if even for just one game, if Dempsey played up top alongside Altidore.

my problem is.. for some reason when playin with the US Nat team.. he seems to dissapear for 85 minutes of every game.. and simply seems like he doesnt care until he gets lucky and is just in that one location where the ball happens to roll.. but his effort seems much improved in the 3 games i have seen of his in the epl this year..

There are probably between 1-8 reasons for Dempsey's disappearing act. i think it was Alexi Lalas who said that on the whole he's playing with better players, sometimes, significantly better, at Fulham than with the USMNT. The other thing is that the US strategy is so intensely focused on defense and solely counter attacking that a lot of time the US midfield and defenders will eschew building an attack for a more direct approach. in my opinion, it's the reason why, when Dempsey gets the ball, he over dribbles and tries to do too much.

i like the idea of him playing up front because he isn't our most active defender and he's got enough ball skills that when he gets to that final layer of defenders he's at his most dangerous. i like Charlie Davies as well though so if he regains his form he'll be first choice of course.

Amen on the last part. Dempsey is definitely at his best when allowed to play up front just behind Altidore or another striker. With Davies healthy that's not an option but I've seen him just disappear on the right wing and do nothing until later in games when they push him forward.
aside from Dempsey but on topic of the US MNT, has anyone heard an update on the status of Jermaine Jones? He could really provide an upgrade in the central mid field. Would love to see him be available in June.

The last i heard/read though i don't know where, was that he was in camp meeting the rest of the squad. Once he gets active again with Schalke and Bradley can evaluate his form they'll be a decision on him but Bradley isn't going to hold a spot for him if he can't evaluate him.
