Thank goodness Cross is gone, the program just got better.

How about Steve Mix as an asst coach to develop the post players?

I think something major needed to happen as well, but come on Nick...gloating over a coach's demise is unseemly.

unseemly doesn't stop a lot of us in a lot of situations so I've no judgement on Nick, but as a board hopefully we don't get carried away.

It didn't work out. Crap happens and hopefully Coach Cross finds a place he enjoys and a better fit and can (somehow) leave here without feeling enemies are left behind or a need to be an enemy.
Karl, I am not gloating, I love UT and Cross certainly seemed like a quality human being when I spoke to him.

But you cannot discount the colossal failure he produced in taking a once proud program into the depths of all DI basketball.

Considering the new arena, fan support, the health of athletic program, his salary, etc., this season was ridiculous. Worse yet, there is very limited talent and few real DI players on this roster.

Even Jay Eck was light-years better than Cross. I hope MOB finds his Beckman and/or Cullop for this program this time.

So in the end, I'm not gloating, just very happy that UT basketball will be going in a better direction now sooner than later.
It will be interesting to see next year's roster-I think we have three quality freshmen returning in Barnett, Griffin and Dressler-somebody needs to get two of them in the weight room and have a few puke sessions but I think in year three inparticular those three wil pay dividends. Of the redshirts, I have high hopes for Hume, but don't recall him being mentioned in the same breath as Griffin or Barnett. Others here seem to think he'll be better and I hope so-a tall guy who can hit from outside would be nice- of course we got one already so one who could hit the three and also post up would be even better.

Gotta find someone to man the point- Bastfield was number two on the team in minutes and can't shoot free throws/won't shoot field goals. Solid backup- we need a starter. Russel could be the link between Dressler and Salter-post depth and more athleticism than Salter consistently shows (although when Ian gets pi**ed he has shown some talent), plus another shotblocker to go with Mo and Justin if Mo is back. Freelove could be a casualty or a major factor next year- he didn't have the plodding, no-shot-until-clock-hits-8-seconds mentatlity Cross wanted. I'd love to see some up-tempo ball for a change.

Whoever comes in really should be someone with proven program building skills- head coach would be my preference- outside of Joplin we have not had much luck with assistants.

This is a place for expressing opinions and I don't anything about Cross's departure could be called unseemly.

He unfortunately was not ready to be a head coach form my perspective and by extending him this chance prematurely he may never be afforded the chance at the Div 1 level again and that is Mike O'Brien's fault.

It was a bad hire.

Well, Bobby Nichols has been gone for a long time, though.

Mix is the only hoops coach in UT hx that can rival Cross for ineptitude. Maybe he'd be better as an assistant but he sure didn't seem to take the head coaching job very seriously.

You're absolutely right Owen...it IS a place for expressing opinions. He expressed his, and I expressed mine.

I was not making a judgment on Cross, his coaching, his players, or his won-loss record. I merely opined about the opening of this thread. I did not try it censor anyone or shout them down.

I'm glad Cross is gone.

It should be ok to say that.

I was only trying to opine that I didn't think Nick was gloating per se and that Cross's departure seems to have been done tactfully.

It takes a lot of soulsearching to realize you're in over your head sometimes.

The opening of the new arena has been spoiled forever. There needs to be some kind of re-dedication ceremony.

I'd settle for re-dedication to the goal of making this team relevant.

It's O'Brien's fault that Cross failed in this job and may now never get another head coaching job - and only because O'Brien hired a guy that came highly recommended but had not head coaching experience? That's a bit of a stretch to blame this on O'Brien. He made a bad hire, but it wasn't because he made a bad decision based on what was known at the time. hindsight makes any decision easier to judge

I see what you are saying.
But I also think Cross was not O'Brien's first choice and maybe not 4th or 5th.
I understand you can't delay the hire too long but he strayed from the mold he and the adminitration wanted in my opinion. Someone like Cullop (for women) and the other known candidates for the men. Most all with head coaching experience and some success.
O'Brien is to blame for really settling.

Just like last time around he is saying that the UT job is a very attractive position.
I am less inclined to think that now because of the inability (in my opinion) to secure any candidate O'Brien really wanted.
