UCF wants Texas in '07
The powerful Longhorns could help the Knights open their new stadium in a game on ESPN.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, especially college football. Well, if everything goes right, Orlando and UCF could be getting a bite of that national spotlight soon.

UCF assistant athletic director John Marini confirmed talks are under way between UCF and Texas for future football games. The 2007 game would be in Orlando -- the first game in UCF's new on-campus stadium -- and would be televised by ESPN. In return, UCF would play two games at Texas later this decade.

Coach George O'Leary was at a charity golf event Monday and was unavailable for comment, as was Athletic Director Steve Orsini.

O'Leary unveiled the possibility Friday to those in attendance at the kickoff event of his 2006 summer coaches tour at UCF's on-campus Fairwinds Alumni Center.

UCF currently has signed contracts to play non-conference games against Florida, Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Lafayette in 2007. A game at Tennessee is expected to be bought out, and the continuation of the USF series remains up in the air. A game with Texas would seem to be a replacement for the lost game against the Volunteers.

There you go ... that's the 2-for-1 deal you guys need and could possibly make happen. Of course, you also need an AD with his schitt together to pull it off.

Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder if we should offer to play Alabama down in Tuscalosa once if we let them come back to play us here at Legion Field twice??? Just kidding,,, Theres not an AD in the world who could pull that off, much less one here in Bham for 2 in Tuscalosa against THE university.
Watson will never play against his brother. He's publicly said that.

Not talking about Alabama ... that's a wet dream for you guys and ain't gonna happen. You might, however, work out something with Nebraska, Ohio State, or Va. Tech ... teams like that.

Then we don't worry about Texas and go for a 2-for-1 deal with some other high profile team. Bring in a VTech or someone.
We had VT a few years ago.

I think the third time we played them, we actually scored. U-G-L-Y.

Oh, and Alpha, UAT giving us a 2 for 1 being our wet dream must be your wet dream.

Actually that 3rd game was pretty competitive. UAB (I believe) was only down 13-10 at halftime and kept it relatively close for most of the game.

That was a case of Watson "uglying up" a game that actually was not very close at all. Tech, playing without an injured Michael Vick, played very conservatively too. But the Hokies set their all time record by allowing UAB only 63 total yards.

here are some highli, er, lowlights:
http://www.hokievision.com/gametime/football/uabqt.html

I watched 3 UAB-Virginia Tech games. None were physically very close. UAB was beaten to a pulp. In 1997, UAB had 65 yards and did not cross midfield.

That said, before Alphadog chimes in, it should be noted Alabama was thrashed 38-7 by the same Hokies in the Music City Bowl in 1998. I was at that game, and it was as miserable in terms of the beating as the ones administered on UAB. The thing I most remember was the Bama players mouthing off that Tech wouldn't be able to block any Tide punts ... and allowing a punt to get blocked to set up an easy TD.
