Since when did people get off work for Confederate Memorial Day?

I have never heard of it until I read the paper today. I'm assuming it's just a southern state, former confederacy thing. I'm not trying to revive the Civil War here, just trying to understand why it is being recognized.

Note that it's celebrated on different days by different states. I don't know of anybody who gets off work and celebrates it, although it's certainly possible that state offices or banks might close.

Basically, you want to think of it as an alternate holiday. For instance, Columbus Day is big doings up north, schools and offices close etc., and down here it's just another day.

CMD started out being celebrated in much the same as regular Memorial Day, as a day to remember the fallen and decorate the graves. This would generally be done by the Daughters of the Confederacy or by family of the Confederate Vet.

Maybe that's why I saw some kids out of school today???
a lot of schools this time of year will have long weekends which are snow days that weren't used. There would be weekends at the end of the spring semester that had fri and a monday off b/c the school system didn't use those weather days.

That's what we had. I never heard it called "Confederate Memorial Day."

Which is a good thing b/c my "Yankee and damn proud of it" mother probably would have gone to court about it. 03-melodramatic
sisters birthday is april 25th and the dmv was closed the day she turned 16 so she couldnt get her drivers license. she still talks about that to this day. that was the day i learned the beauty of the south. i'm guessing the seattle, wa dmv probably doesnt close for conf memorial day. i wonder if the reverand al sharpton knows about this most beautiful of holidays? i'm sure he could conjure up a nice little diddy about this one.

You know this is one of my favorite holidays. The state employees here in Alabama get Confederate Memorial Day, as well as Jefferson Davis' birthday (which is in May). Also, the only thing Don Seigelman ever did worth a damn was he decreed April to be Confederate History Month. You never really hear anything about it though.

God, I love the South.

Dude, you just don't know. My mom was a D.A.R. She was big into genealogy. I'm entitled to membership in the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Confederacy, and even the Sons of Union Veterans on my mother's side. I spent more time as a kid in old county courthouses, briar overgrown old family cemeteries and the like than I care to remember. Stomped all over many a revolutionary and civil war battlefield, too.

The earliest excursion south we know of was when Daniel Levi Gray came down to South Carolina from Virginia. He showed up on the 1810 census. Hell, on my mother's side I'm related to General Prescott who was supposed to have said "don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes" at Breed's Hill.

I love the Old South. I've lived and travelled in it all my life. I'm a Suhthern boy through and through.
I have made geneological connections to the likes of Robert E. Lee, Buford Pusser, and Elvis Presley. I guess that makes me about as southern as you can get.
Family trees and battlefield tours don't make you Southern no more than the fact that you live in the South does. It's a state of mind. It's undescribable. Sublime. Don't try to explain what makes you Southern. You're Southern just because you are.
But having a really strong dislike for ******* yankees doesn't hurt

I Think I know the feeling. And if what you say is true, then I'm not a Southerner.

Although I was born and lived in the south my whole life, I realize that the Civil War was fought over 140 years ago and while I find it fascinating history, it is just that - history, and not something I base my life around trying to relive it or win it again for "my side" . I realize that the South is not going to rise again. I see no reason to fly the confederate flag. I even married a Yankee. 04-jawdrop :shhh:
