I was in town for this tilt.

It was the tale of 3 games.

1. BGSU tried pressing WMU from the git go and WMU came down and drained two 3's in two possessions. DK then Tel. King Louie calls a time out. About 2 minutes off the clock.

2.Bugs call off the press and sit in a 2-3 zone completely changing the tempo. WMU allows BGSU to dictate tempo for the next 32-33 minutes falling behind with an ebb and flow moving from 4-8 pts down, then to 9-11 down with no real move to close the gap.

3. WMU goes FC with a hard trap. They get BGSU to up their tempo playing out of control shaving 4-5 pts off about an 11 pt. lead. They solve the FC press and we go to a 1/2 trap and BGSU coughs it up a time or two and we lop off another 2-3 points. The Falcons solve the 1/2 court trap for a bucket. D Ward garners one of his 9 rebounds and we dodge a bullet and get those 2 back.
We absolutely fail in the next possession in 1/2 crt trap and look terrible but Otis my Man clanks a dunk attempt instead of laying it in and the ball bounces out to the hash mark and Mikey outsprints a taller BGSU player to the hole for contested lay up.
FC again and you know the rest of the story.

I'm not sure how BGSU is going to come into this game having laid two movements in the last two tilts. I'm betting LO gets the "revenge" factor going and the Orange are ready. Not that CMU is easy, but both squads know they arent Kent at Kent.

BGSU will still play the zone. I also wonder if they will play a triangle and two or diamond/box and one on DK and get into Tels noggin whispering "You can be the hero. Catch and pitch from 3. You da man!"

We need Tel but we need him to defend unlike the last time. Without saying so, Ok I'll say it, He quit last game. He didnt do jack on O so he folded his tent and mentally went home. Thank the good Lord that someone on the staff got Ward in as he "stood in the gap".

Keys: Switch on D but do it strategically. 3x I saw Tel quit and forced Mikey to guard a big inside. They scored once, Mikey battled and got a deflection and DLaw helped cover up on another. But maddening to watch.

Don't settle for J's against the zone.

Expect them to trap our posts on the block and in the corners at times.
Don't waste then kill dribbles. Meet the pass.
Bigs, dont dribble. Catch and make the move NOW or kick it out.
Perimeters. Leave the Kodak at home. No standing and gawking. Ball goes inside find and move to an open space.
Get the ball in the middle with a wing sliding in and go right up and make them pay, don't hesitate.

Do you want to press?

Be careful. It's still not our staple. They'll be ready this time.

Key to success. Press when they least expect it.
1. When we are up.
2. After their time out.
3. Dead ball
4. After transition bucket

A traps best friend is the threat it poses. Everyone has a "break". What everyone doesnt have is the mental toughness to execute when it wasnt expected.

Be judicious and not greedy but be intentional not cautious.

Best type of press. One that works.

"Works" means executed.

Execution means you dictate.

Pressing doesnt have to be a hard trap and everyone steps up to look for the steal. It can be a passing lane "trap".
1. Pressure ball but not to close that you get beat. Keep in front.
2. "show" trap and fall back after dribble is killed.
3. Very effective if "they" are anticipating the trapping press. They have the tendency to over commit. Draw them in, show and go.
Very effective at 3/4 backing into 1/2 court. They are on the clock and they are expecting someone to be open as a trap makes it 2 on 1. If dribble is killed or time off the clock the reaction is to "hurry". Just what you want.
Next time, dribbler is more intentional. Keep in his grill but not to steal. Get his eyes down at your feet and hands. Turn him. Turn him again. Jump him. Everyone is rotating up in anticipation.

Next time, in his grill but feign the trap and go passing lane.

Next time down, run a trapper at him, running the original man off as all rotate.

Sum: Hard double team.
Feign hard and stay but up in PL.
Run, jump and run, (Stay 1-1) but up in PL.

All of this can be done in a total of 10 possessions. Strategic, calculated, judicious and effective. The only question is will you convert?
