I was just wondering what everyone thought about this...if we do win 3 of our last 4, do you think CMD deserves coach of the year? Look at what kind of season we have had to what preseason thought we would have. Or, do you think Coach Barbee would get it over him?
Davis should get it if UAB ends up in the top 4.
If the voters take the easy way out, whoever wins the conference will get coach of the year, most likely Barbee.
If they want to award the coach whose team did much better than expected, then a case can be made for Davis, Josh Pastner and Donnie Jones at Marshall; Davis having done the most unexpected, considering we were picked 9th or 10th.
I suspect that Davis is the favorite at this point, unless of course, they just award the league winner with coach of the year. On the other hand, Barbee should get points for keeping Caracter focused and on the team this long.

The moral of the story is it would be tough to go wrong with any one of three or four coaches this year, which is a testament to the coaching talent in the conference. We have at least six very solid coaches in the conference, and a couple who are probably doing the best they can with the tools they've been given. But there is a pretty clear cause and effect that explains why the schools at the top are the schools at the top.

I agree that Pitt, Syracuse, Wis have all achieved way beyond everyones expectations. The offseason COY would have to go to Cal at UK. He definetly purchased, I mean recruited the best players. lol.

Now, there may be plenty of people who didn't like Mike Davis as an in-game coach. But the main reason he lost the state of Indiana and ended up losing his job was because he couldn't get the in-state kids to stick around, and Indiana fans believe they could win the national championship every year with nothing more than their high school legends.
Specifically, when Davis lost Sean May to North Carolina, he started to lose the fans. And then they believed he was trying to change their tradition and playing blame games when things didn't go well (sound familiar?). (See link --

I think Mike Davis is a
good in-game coach, and a
very good coach when he's able to play the "nobody believes in us" card like he did with his '02 team (a card he is absolutely crushing with this year's team that has no business being 22-5). Where he falls apart is when expectations are not met or off-court problems arise and he starts taking some heat, or when he makes promises about recruits he can't meet. Mike Davis, historically, is actually not a
great recruiter. (I mean, sure, he got a few great ones at Indiana. But so did Mike Dubose at UAT.)
Where he's been successful is with kids like he has on this year's team who maybe weren't highly regarded, and he preys on their desire to prove people wrong and builds chemistry and teamwork from it. Hopefully, he learned from all this and will realize UAB succeeds -- and he, personally, is at his dead-level best, when we rely on Mo Finleys and AJ Johnsons and not DeMarcus Cousinses. I have every reason to believe he can consistently identify and get those kinds of players who can and will overachieve and keep us relevant year after year.

Conference Coach Of The Year? Hard to argue with that one (especially if they finish no lower than 2nd or 3rd), either he or Barbee (I assume he's the one at UTEP)...National Coach Of The Year? Not if Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas have anything to say about it, they're gonna see that Kryzewski, Boeheim or Self at Kansas walk away with that hardware...

The guy got the job by pure luck (aka Terry Bowden at Auburn).His First year at INDIANA was incredible and keep his job but everybody was waiting for his failure .
Came to UAB because of his alabama connection . He was hoping to prove everybody in Indiana wrong and get a super job somewhere asap.He prove everybody was right in Indiana and performe like the worst coach on UAB history (no ncaa bid ) .
After the cousin fiasco , he seem to have a wake up call ....like I am not to good for UAB and I need to work hard and produce because I will be fire from UAB and my star status (big money salary) is over .
He did a good job of coaching this year but we wont win cusa regular and dont expect to win the cusa tournament .
You dont get coach of the year by making the ncaa tournament especially if you coach at UAB

Yes and no. I have really enjoyed this season, and I will be very, VERY disappointed if we don't make the tourney, especially if this team finishes the season strong (say only one more loss to UTEP). However, I don't think it takes away the accomplishment(s) of this team and staff to have the kind of season they have had. Also, should we finish the season in that manner and go to the CUSA championship game and NOT get in, I will lay it all at the feet of the media and selection committee IDIOTS that wear only non-CUSA blinders.
