I love this city! I really don't care what Forbes think.
The Memphis & Mid-South truly has a human soul unlike any other metro area in the country...we should be proud of what we are, and most importantly, what we will become while we work together to make things better....just sayin'.
Love Memphis...but it was the love of a woman that brought me to Philadelphia. However, I will be back in Memphis this weekend!
Don't hope an Atlanta on Memphis - at least not the crime, traffic and city government. Yes, Memphis has issues in those areas too but Atlanta has those issues in large measure. For better or worse, the path of Memphis was shaped under Boss Crump early in the 20th century. Crump ruled Memphis and actually state govenment too as mayor of Memphis. He had legislation passed that gave Memphis priority in incorporation matters within Shelby Co which has been used in the last 30 yrs to the detriment of Memphis & Shelby Co. Detrimental because it has enabled corrupt governance to rule without option compared to Atlanta where no such incorporation legislation existed. Therefore the city of Atlanta has been restricted from growing in area and population (current Atlanta city pop is approx 500,000 compared to an Atlanta metro/regional pop of approx 6M) because it is completely surrounded by small incorported cities who are much more responsive to the electorate yet convenient to the city center. Also GA counties are very small in geographical area comparison to Shelby Co and other W TN counties. The multiple incorporations and county line barriers have served the Atlanta region well by requiring local governments to essentially compete for residents and business - and it has virtually stopped in power grabs by local governments to the detriment of its residents and businesses. This has served to make the Atlanta region a very attractive & competitive location for business. The Atlanta region has also grown because in the 1950s it sought and embraced major federal gov agencies to locate in Atlanta providing significant middle class jobs within the city. Another difference is that the Atlanta region was an early adoptor of the fed interstate hiway system (even though it is bad today) which helped develop the Atlanta perimeter while Memphis seemed to fight adopting anything federal in nature including the interstate system. And the obvious advantage of Atlanta is that it is the state capitol - which btw, I attribute to Nashville's fast growth over the last 25 yrs. In summary no kingdoms can be developed in the Atlanta region because the ability for business and residents have multiple options of where to live and locate and still remain in the Atlanta region.

I've traveled all 50 states and Canada and I will say that Memphis does have its bad qualities and problems, just like most cities its size, BUT the good out-weighs the bad BIG TIME. The uniqueness makes it special. The Q, the music, the airport, the friendly people... all make for a nice combination.

You've been misinformed.
memphis has issues. terrible public transportation, high crime, very dirty city, poor infrastructure, corruption in politics, terrible school system (thanks SouthhavenTiger, haha), etc..

BUT it also has St Jude, BBQ, Beale Street, lots of huge trees and green areas, etc.....

so, i wouldnt necessarily consider it miserable, but it does need some major improvements, with that said, I am still living here, and I make sure i enjoy every day to the fullest!
Interesting that nobody has mentioned the poor school system in Memphis which is a major reason many companies refuse to locate here.
Memphis definitely is not perfect, but it's home. Memphis has it's problems, but every city does. Memphis has tons of character and positive attributes, though, and there's nowhere else that I would rather claim as my hometown.
If you don't like it here, I-40 is wide open.

i'm actually moving back to memphis on monday.:domokun:
I laugh at folks who complain about traffic and drivers here.
Get out to a big city once.
When it comes to traffic, we're still in Kansas, Toto.

actually its not, in the mornings its bumper to bumper comming in and in the afternoons its bumper to bumper going out. Where do all these cars come from? Could it be that they work in Memphis but live somewhere east of Memphis, Surely not!!!!

I'll check into that. I didn't specify that you head east. It may be bumper to bumper, but it's open. Those same folks you are talking about, they are in my way also. Maybe we should leave earlier, and come home later. No I can't do that, we'll just have to fight em.
This was obviously put together before X left. Maybe we can vacate the list.
