More than turnovers, more than points surrendered off turnovers, the main reason Huskies fade away and lose focus is lack of a bball team IQ. We are plain D U M B .

At least NIU showed some hussle and heart.

The last 60 seconds was also ridiculous. Let's give Kool even more points in closing seconds. Even he, teamates and coaching staff were smiling.

It was enjoyable to listen to impartial, professional announcers call a game rather than the homers we are so often accustomed to hearing.

The outcome and the inability to do anything defensively the second half to slow down Kool is reason enuff for me to skip the 155 mile trek to Charleston, altho I would not be shocked if Huskies win a squeaker.

Toledo may be the only other win this season. Consider that next month when we reflect on this year's preseason expectations & your forecasts.

I did not liststen to Baker on radio. Anything of interest at halftime?

Did you notice how bright the far reaches of the Universty Arena looked on camera?

Their cheerleaders looked H O T.

And how about that haltime ESPN frozen then out of synch video glitch? YEASH.

Finally, how many times during the broadcast did we watch the same three freakin' commericials run over and over and over again? Repetition was very annoying......

Not sure what feed you were picking up on, certainly wasnt the same one I was watching. That was more biased to WMU than NIU's broadcast is to NIU.

Kool is one nasty SOB, must not be fun to play against him.

I have stated ever since we lost to Kent that we would not win any more conference games this year. I still believe that. We WILL lose to Toledo and we WILL lose to EIU. I hate to be so down on the team. I know HuskieLove(or whatever Mr. Positive's name is) will not like this post but thats life.
Kowal, Patton,Nixon and Silas have been playing well lately. I would say the team is still playing hard for Patton. The team just isnt physically strong or mentally strong and its killing them at end of games.
BTW with this loss we are officially eliminated from MACW contention ..

Damn!!! Before this game, I had visions of a MAC West trophy gleaming in the showcase in the Convo Center. Oh, woe is us!! Oh well, let's get 'em next year!
I was cracking up on my drive home from the health club. Listening to the game on the Score, Bill Baker actually was discussing our chances of winning the MAC West like we had a real chance. He corrected the update guy when he said a BSU win would eliminate us. It was a BSU win plus an NIU loss.

Was Baker thinking we were going to back into the MAC West champion?

Also, Kowal had a good offensive day. Why can't he play like that all the time.
We had a few spans where we did play unintelligently. We seemingly can't sustain focus when we need to and other teams make a run or finish a game better. Maybe we are too tired later in the second half. Or maybe the weight of a losing streak puts pressure on and we make dumb mistakes instead of playing loose. I thought Silas took some forced shots. Nixon made a few turnovers that hurt at key times. Fakuade missed some point blank shots badly. We had some dumb fouls (not counting the ones late even). Landers got a Tech. We did hit our free throws and we hung tough basically without Anderson. But, it is still another loss to endure. Maybe the staff can administer a basketball IQ test and those who score the highest get to play, since we aren't winning anyway apparently going by who just has the most talent. Find out who understands the game and can think the game. Does an evaluation like that even exist? Or is it just player instinct and knowledge of the game that make them basketball smart?
When you get to the soph yr in college in D-1 ball and having played alot in AAU ball as well, how the hell can a player NOT understand the game well enuff to avoid repeating stupid mistakes regularly at critical moments in games?

It's more the norm than the exception lately and we are nearly into March.

Tell me exactly what announcers said which made them highly biased? I recall them saying Huskies are capable of stringing together a few W's and closing the season strong...They gave NIU credit for hanging tuff the first half and coming back to lead at halftime....They did not blame NIU when players became chippy....They remarked WMU must somehow bring out the best in our three point shooting....They complimented Kowal several times....They talked about Patton's success at Colorado.... I believe their comment was vaild about Patton & players extending the game with needless fouls when the horse was out of the barn...

BTW: Did you catch how announcers mentioned states with great HS bball yet ILLINOIS was not on their tongues?
They did acknowledge CPS hoops and Detroit likewise.

It puzzles me why Patton had such success at a nonbasketball school in BIG XII yet cannot even sniff success at NIU.

Misery loves company. Look at NU a few months ago and the Cats now. Their "best team in decades" not likely to be in NCAA tourney.
The players might not always play smart, but maybe I'm a dumb one too. Explain this logic to me. Landers 1 minute. Dzepina 1 minute. Storm 2 minutes (on like 2 or 3 times subbing in). What good does this do for the team? I would think that it hurts when players go in for one minute or a couple minutes when you might as well just play the other 8 (or however many in your rotation) guys those few minutes more. They are already warmed up and ready to play instead of cold off the bench. They are already physically in the game which makes it easier mentally. You already have chemistry and flow among the players. So why break it up for that type of subbing?

I don't mean to say that those guys shouldn't play. In fact I think they all can contribute, especially Storm and Landers if left there for a while without being pulled quick and feel they should play more instead of some guys getting more minutes. Dzepina has a role his body can fill at times also. But, putting anyone in for 1 minute doesn't seem like it is beneficial for the team and definitely not beneficial for those players who can't even get going before taken out. I can see putting a guy in for a minute if it is for foul trouble at the end of the half to help the team, but that isn't the case here. It is random insertion of a player for a minute or sometimes less? You can't even gauge if they will be able to help or not in that short amount of time. It isn't like the other guys getting the minutes are winning or aren't making mistakes and missing shots when in there, so why the rush to sub them back in? Is there someone who understands coaching out there to help me out? It's bothered me for a while the past few years and seeing the minutes played in the stats after games. Is this common practice on a regular basis for all coaches?
Finally - is Ervin hurt or is he pretty much just along for the ride the rest of the way? I can see why he doesn't play a lot, but I was just curious.

What are the reasons some of these guys don't seem to have it mentally? Which players do you feel don't understand the game? I agree that some don't seem to as well as others and we need players that do have that higher basketball IQ. I was just curious as to both the reasons and who you feel, if any, falls into that category.

This statement by them made me question their knowledge at all. It has been well known for many years that Illinois has been considered a "hotbed" for high school basketball and that is why it is recruited so heavily by schools around the nation and why it is harder to keep local talent in the area. College coaches have been reported as saying that very often in recruiting articles and shows. Not just Chicago either. I remember reading an article many years ago that tried to rank the states in terms of high school basketball. Illinois was listed along with Indiana, New York, California, Kentucky among others. I don't remember that Michigan was listed in that top 10 or whatever but maybe because of Detroit. I know Iowa wasn't high on the list if at all. I found that statement incredible, and not because Illinois was left out but that Iowa was mentioned instead. How about Delaware or Rhode Island? Idaho? Iowa has a team this year ranked nationally, but that hardly ever is the case. It happens often with Illinois teams. Somewhere there has to be a breakdown of % of college players from different states.

It has nothing to do with if I like your post or not, as I have said before and will say again...You have a right to your own opinion and thats what this message board is for....No worries RobertN!!!
I agree it was an ommission by announcers to exclude Illinois HS hoops.

It does not mean they were bias nor called the game poorly.

I understand. At first I thought you meant that it was "evidence" Illinois doesn't have the same level of basketball in high school as even Iowa, when it is clearly superior in terms of numbers of quality players. And I agree it doesn't mean they called the game poorly because of their mentioning Michigan and Iowa but not Illinois in that discussion.

Although, I would have to say they were tilted a little in favor of WMU. Other people watching it with me actually noticed it before I did and they aren't even really NIU supporters. They seemed to look a little through glasses tinted more brown and gold. But I didn't mind listening to them that much.
I turned to the game for a grand total of 5 minutes to see if the Huskies could possibly look worse on TV than they do in person. In those 5 minutes, I came away with the strong impression that the announcers were highly biased towards WMU. I also got this impression of bias from Reghi before when he did our FB games on the MAC Game of the Week.

There is no doubt in my mind that there is a MAC bias against NIU. I have seen it for years. For any of you doubters, try to find the broadcast of last year's MAC football preview. NIU was featured FAR less than any other team. I believe that the first mention of NIU came about 40 minutes into the 1-hour broadcast. Their ignoring of NIU was almost comic.
Did Tyler Storm play less than 2 minutes. He was in, missed a three and was out before he got warmed up. If you are going to have such a quick hook, why play him.

If I remember correctly he was in for maybe close to a minute early in the first half. He did nothing good or bad, there wasn't time to do anything. I thought that was weird that he got in early and that was all he played. He played a very short time in the second half and missed a shot that didn't look bad and was out shortly after. I think he then played the last few seconds. The stats say he played 2 minutes and subbed in like 3 times. That's almost hard to do! I don't understand playing a kid just to take him out quickly every time. That has to be hard on a kid. First of all, I think he should play more because he seems to do some right things when he is in. Despite what he can't do, he might make others better being out there. I can't say that about some other guys who do play. Secondly, as I stated in another post, why play any kid that little because it hurts the flow of your guys you have decided to give more minutes to. I wonder what his thoughts are on coming back getting treated mentally like that.
Who is a more blatant football announcer during NIU games that the guy who coached at NIU & ND and cannot get beyond two sentences without mentioning Novak?

I provided specific comments by announcers as favorable to NIU. Tell me some that were not and when the number of WMU favorable comments outnumbered the favorable comments about NIU.

Back up the opinion with some quotes by announcers unfavorable to NIU.

Perception is not always reality. When you are losers many fans most always feel victimized by officials and announcers.
one of the announcers, Steve Mix, is an ex NBA guy of 13 years who played at Toledo...hardly a big fan of WMU--these guys sometimes just fill air and the talk about which states produce bball talent was just rambling and a pure oversight in not mentioning illinois......i heard no bias but i surely heard lack of preparation--how many times did he call David Brown, Donald? and his explanation on the dinunno play where their point guard was tossed was just flat out wrong....he said MD got a T and but the two shots their guy shot was because of the foul that was called....and the eviction of their pt guard was the result of his T....Mix also said, when the officials went to the table to look at the replay that the refs just told the coaches to talk to your players to settle them down...not realizing Patton had asked for, and the refs, complied, a TV review of the incident that led to the guy being tossed. I also thought that lander's T (unless he said something) was unwarranted...he got smashed hard by Donald Brown on a box out with brown pounding him while facing landers who ended up almost on his butt out of bounds...yeah, it looked like landers had balled up fists but never swung and never even got within 3 feet of brown....i actually liked the play from the standpoint of it showed fire in both kids and i do think mix may have commented on the hard aggressive play...which by the way was the way Mix played at Toledo and for 13 years with the sixers, pistons & lakers...he was one rugged sob.

I would add Hall to that list, and I agree. These guys need to be stronger. What is the weight program? They should be trying to feed Kowal the ball every time down court (which they don't do), but also, Kowal and ALL of them need to get stronger. And they need to play smarter. That's part of the program, no?
