For you old farts...today is Richard's birthday. You might remember him as the lead singer for Zuider Zee way back in the 70's. His birth name was Richard Staggs but he changed it to Richard Orange. They were originally from Louisiana but lived in Memphis for a while. Here's his website and some old pics I have of him and the band. Interesting time in my life and some interesting musicians, to say the least.

I wonder how old Richard is now?

Incredible Band in the day.
you know GhostGray....I couldn't find it anywhere, and I really looked hard. But if I remember right I'm betting he's turning somewhere between 58-60.
I definitely remember Richard Orange. Zuider Zee was awesome. I saw them many times, but the one I remember most is at some place on Highland, had a stage and cocktail tables, sheesh, so long ago that brain cell is gone forever... I had an album by Zuider Zee. "Haunter of the Darkness" is an *awesome* song. Very much progressive rock for the time.

Interesting stuff there. I never knew "Haunter of the Darkness" was based on an H. P. Lovecraft story. And David Smith, bassist, I know/knew very well. Great session bass player and all-around good guy.

Nice trip down memory lane, MissJ! :rocker:
I remember Zuider Zee very well. No one seems to remember the name of that place on Highland. Saw many good bands there.
I think it might have been a movie theatre before it was a club, maybe? Seems like I can remember some individual seats in rows (theatre-style) and the flat part of the floor the seats had been removed and tables put down there. The stage didn't seem terribly deep, which would go along with being a movie stage. And it was right in the middle of the strip on Highland. Hmm. This will worry me until I pull the name from the deep recesses of my brain...unless I fried that brain cell a loooooong time ago... :)
Wasn't it the movie theater that was next to Bull Shotte, which is now Newby's?? Zuider Zee, wow.
That would be the right neighborhood. Do you remember the name of it?
Club Kizer?
I know they played at Lafayette's Music Room alot back then. They also played for frat/sorority parties on the Memphis State campus too. I remember being at a party where Linda Thompson I think was maybe homecoming queen or Miss Memphis State or something........this Linda Thompson...............

Thompson was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee.
In July 1972 she began a relationship with the recently separated Elvis Presley; their relationship ended in December 1976.
In 1980 Thompson began a relationship with former Olympic Gold Medal decathlete Bruce Jenner. The couple married on January 5, 1981. They had two children, Brandon Jenner (born June 4, 1981) and Brody Jenner (born August 21, 1983). They divorced in 1984.
On June 22, 1991, she married composer and record producer David Foster, with whom she has co-written many songs. He filed for divorce in 2006.

Isn't that where they had the Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Geez, what was the name of that place?
Rocky Horror was at the movie place on the same side of the street as Newby's. The place I'm talking about and that has been mentioned. Would be almost directly across from McDonalds. Just Barely North of McDonalds. It was a small club, saw Target, Southern Creed. It had a very small stage.

The Name "Strawberry Fields" came up once in conversation about this club. I just don't remember. Missj, I remember Linda Thompson very well. She killed my GPA my freshman year. I couldn't get out of the Student Center when she was in there.

That's the place I remember. It was either next to, or converted from, a waterbed place. I used to watch Target there all the time.
I know a girl that used to hang out and play music with him a few years ago. She was really hot. She made a tape of the music. I am not sure what he did back in the day, I assume zydeco, but this stuff was abstract to say the least. She was a fine young lady, played mandolin okay and had a pretty but light voice. I played music with her many times even with my wife. Eventually, jealousy took over and we stopped playing. Happy Birthday to Richard Orange, the dude I, kind of but not really at all, know. I wasn't here when that club you guys speak of was open but I am sure I can ask a couple of people and get the name.
Another rockin' club back in the day was the Thirsty Elephant. Saw lots of great bands there, notably Big Star and the Hot Dogs. Used to love to listen to Hot Dogs doing "I Walk The Line".
I remember everything mentioned here. I might cry.

I had a friend and his band played there all the time. I loved the Thirsty Elephant. I was sorta partial to "Tootsies Ballroom". Those are all the places where we got our "Rock" on. Loved "High Cotton" also.
Yep, High Cotton, Miss Kitty's, Top Hat... man, those were the days...
