Politically, the great thing about YouTube is you can make ads on the cheap, completely ignore the restrictions of TV such as time, and if you're lucky, spread the ad without a large media buy. This one from the CA GOP race for US Senate capitalizes on the last item, but at a cost of making its producer, Carly Fiorina look batshit insane.

Okay, so let me get this right: True fiscal conservatives are sheep. And that's a good thing? In a state that's in a complete fiscal meltdown, Campbell actually sought to help the governor govern rather than just snipe at the legislature, and that's also a bad thing? And if Tom Campbell isn't among the "men we aspire to be" does that mean that Carly is? And since when did purity piety have anything to do with fiscal conservatism?
Wowser. The first minute looks like a Terry Gilliam short. The last minute with the killer wolf is cool, too.
Wow, that's entertainment there. They should have gone with the wolf's theme from Peter and the Wolf to put give the right sense of menace to the actor crawling around in a field with a sheep's costume and red eyes.
I guess it is not well-made, as the message is unclear, but I think the "sheep" are are the voters who will vote for anyone who calls himself a 'fiscal conservative", even though his record says different, and he is really a fiscal liberal in fiscal conservative's clothing.
Texd - what about the most bizarre, non-sensical campaign ad you saw yesterday? Can you please make this a running item here? Even daily?

That was just strange - Cylon-like eyes on the wolf (would have been cooler if the eyes went back and forth), a scattered story-telling. That falling sheep was classicly bad. I'm still trying to figure out what the whole up-on-a-pedastal-falling-down sequence is supposed to represent.
03-lmfao Carly Fiorina "political outsider"... 03-lmfao

I was going to say ever but decided I had probably seen more bizarre at some point and that I should avoid hyperbole.

Like the quote we saw the other day about the Kennedys "taking on the establishment"...

+1.

Setting aside the bizarre imagery and production, I kept wondering when they were going to talk about what specifically Carly will do to balance the budget. I know that omission is standard in politics, but it seemed glaringly absent here. If they had not talked about her beyond mentioning her name, it would have been a typical attack ad (well, typical in that regard; the production is still absurd). To me, the vagueness of "has accomplished enormous things in life" constrasted starkly to the specificity of the accusations against Campbell.

On re-watching I also noticed they used "literally" to literally mean "figuratively." I literally get a kick out of that.

She'll cut waste, fraud, and abuse, what else?

Here's an article on the ad from Slate:

It's the same guy who did "Big John" Cornyn!

Maybe she doesn't want to be too specific about her accomplishments at HP.

She has a history of it. She saw wasteful spending on the part of HP shareholders buoyed by their large equity stakes, so she cut shareholder value in half.

Funny. Of course that ad never mentioned what happened to Big John at the end of the song.
Tough crowd, demanding specifics. I guess we all learned something from the glittering generalities of "hope" and "change".
I found the ad a bit weird, but no more so than many others.

And much less offensive than many. I guess it's just a question of perspective.

I learned that a long time ago. What struck me here was not so much the vagueness about Carly but the contrast of that to the specificity about Campbell.
Of course, some campaign ads are easier to make than others.

Wait, they elect their coroner? That's old school.
Given that attack ads are idiotic, this works better than most of them.
Certainly, it is more interesting. It avoids the usual conventions of attack ads which involve showing the opponent in a terrible black and white photo, having a either a single voice (or an alternating male and female voice) make snide remarks remarks about the opponent, etc. It seems that political ads are designed to appeal to the Least Common Denominator of voters. If Julius Streicher of Der Strumer had not been hung or Joseph Goebbels not committed suicide, I wonder what sort of atttack ads they could have devised.

Demon Sheep has given rise to this parody used to attack the BCS by making it look like the BCS put it out.
