Campbell beat App State something like 92 to 63 tonight..Campbell will be hard to beat especially at home..

Just checking on the SoCon.. App State is second in their division just behind Western Carolina.. The College is 3 and 0 in conference play and leading their division..Charleston got beat up on in pre season play, but they are winning now against SoCon teams.. It's going to be another interesing year in the SoCon..
App must have started their new years drinking a night early.
I checked out the head to head record so far and right now ASun teams are 4-5 against the SoCon. I'm not trying to get into a debate about which conference is better, the interesting stat I noticed when looking at that record is that the four wins come from two schools -> ETSU & Campbell. Both are 2-1. We have wins against App and C of C at home and a loss at Chatt (which we all know is a tough place to play). Pretty solid on our part. Campbell has decisive wins against UNC A (on the road) and App (at home), with a close loss at Cullowhee. Campbell will be a factor in conference play this year.
I'm not yet sold on Campbell. Their most impressive game thus far was a loss against a loaded Western Carolina team in Cullowee. A few games later they lost to a 306-RPI Longwood.

Campbell is Mercer...Mercer is Campbell....I worry not for either of them.
UNCA isn't in the SoCon.
Jonathan Rodriguez update: 20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals on 48% shooting.

Just proving a point. Stats like that don't lie.

My opinion stands...and when we play Campbell he probably won't effect us much. I am pretty sure in all the games we've played him...he's had two big scoring games. Mostly...he's been nothing.

4 out of 6 games he's had double figures, 3 out of 6 he's scored 15 or more, and 2 out of 6 he's scored 25 or more.

Also, in 5 out of 6 games he's had at least 7 boards.

Mostly...he's been solid.

And he's done it all quietly. Lacking thunder or fury.

Let's break this down. For the past three years the Atlantic Sun has been trying to sell him as the number one player in the league. Are you buying?

You're right. My bad. Wasn't thinking straight.

Maybe it's because I don't love the SoCon as much as most people on this board...
Umm, Campbell beat us last year. Why wouldn't we take them seriously??

There is no question Jonathan Rodriguez is one of the best players in this league and that he is 100% legit. Four years of being a top scorer/rebounder in the conference is no fluke. He's probably going to break 2,000 points this year. That's CP level, but with rebounding added in. He is one of the highest scorers in the nation career wise. You don't luck your way to numbers like that.

Clarification:

Campbell beat an ETSU team that had come apart at the seems. That was before they played as a team again.

and secondly every team should be taken seriously.....otherwise one is doomed to suffer an upset.

That does not change the fact that Rodriguez is the most overrated player in the Atlantic Sun.
dont think there is a team in the socon, a-sun, or others similar conferences that have a team that can not bring their "a-game" and expect to win
Runningfool:

You make valid points about Rodriguez. Statiscially, it's hard to argue the merits of his game. He's been a versatile and consistent performer for CU througout his time. As an aside, I briefly chatted with him as he was walking to the bus after a game right outside the dome. I found him to be engaging and affable.

That said, just based on my sense of him during games, I've never been blown away. I prefer to rely on objective data to form an opinion, but in his case, it's purely a reaction. I don't fear him when we play CU, like I do Ben Smith, former Bruin Justin Hare, former Owl Ronnell Wooten, and some others. Just watching those guys shooting in warmups made me nervous.

Addendum: James Florence fits into this category for me too. Florence is exceptionally talented and has put up huge stats, but it's been, as Gold said, "Sound and fury signifying nothing..."
Doesn't really matter to me if he "lacks thunder and fury." The fact remains is that he'll put up at least 20 against us if we come out against him with that attitude, and I'm sure Bartow and the players realize that.

As for him being overrated, with his stat line he's going to be a contender for player of the year every year. I'd rather have a player score 15-20 every game then have one blow up for 25-30 then score 5-10 the next game (a la Wooten, Florence).

Now, do I think he's ASUN player of the year? No. But I do think he'll deservedly end up on the all-conference first team. I mean, the guy is averaging essentially a double-double, and is one of 2 guys in the league to be averaging more rebounds a game then Hubbard. Right now, from the stats I've seen, the ASUN teams should go like this:

FIRST TEAM
Adnan Hodzic, Lipscomb (POY)
Ben Smith, Jacksonville
Tommy Hubbard, ETSU
Jonathan Rodriguez, Campbell
James Florence, Mercer

SECOND TEAM
Markeith Cummings, Kennesaw
Daniel Emerson, Mercer
Justin Tubbs, ETSU
Josh Slater, Lipscomb
Nick Schneiders, USCU
Rodriguez is one of the few players from the ASun who has been noticed nationally. He has been a mid-major All-American at least once (Mid-majority.com). He may not be flashy, but he's productive. He's especially productive on the offensive glass. Just because he doesn't put a highlight reel together doesn't mean he can't do damage.
THANK YOU. Well said, and completely accurate. Production is what matters, not flash. And there is no way anybody can discount his production.
