thanks

That building is no longer a grocery store. It has been converted to a school.

The Schnuck's Market (C-store w/gas) is still there out in front.

Is the Seessels on Poplar still there? I recall that being a big store and was close to a Home Depot...

it is now Schnuck's....speaking of old grocery chains, my first job as a teenager was at the old Big Star on the corner of Quince and White Station. I don't think those exist anymore either.
My old stomping grounds too. I believe thats where the band,Big Star, got its name.

Does anyone here remember the fifties? When I was a little kid in Memphis and lived at 1526 Court we went to a small Weona Grocery which was owned by the Ross family. I can't recall first names, I was under seven years old. It had a butcher shop in the back. Mrs. Ross had red hair and used to call me Iodine cause I have real dark eyes and hair. The african american man who worked for them was named Wesley. He rode a delivery bicycle. The Rosses had some little boys and I went to a birthday party at their house once. There were pickled pigs feet in a big jar on the butcher counter. The store was in a row of shops and I think a ball field was nearby. Ring a bell with any of you old timers out there?
I believe that Liberty Cash stores were a franchise of the Montesi family. Big Stars were a franchise of the grocery division of Malone and Hyde, which is now owned by Super Valu.

The Memphis grocery market has been "owned" by Kroger for decades and it's rare for other chains to be successful here. Safeway, National Foods (Del Farm/Big D), and many others have tried and left. Seesels filled an upscale nitch that worked well. IMHO, Schnucks is doing an admirable job of attempting to make a go of it.

Here's something that real oldtimers may remember.....
"All around Memphis-town,
Shop at Hogue and Knott,
Spend a little money,
and carry home a lot?

That's as old as "Look Porter, candy stripes!" and Burma Shave signs.

Remember the Big Star promotion......"Let's Go to the Races!" with Dave Brown on Channel 13?

When the Mrs. and I were newlyweds, we used to shop at the Giant Foods at Poplar / White Station.

Gold mine.

If I remember correctly Dave hosted the local show and the "Let's Go to the Races" announcer was Jack Drees.

When we were cleaning out my father's house we found a stack of Top Value stamps that had never been redeemed. Now you don't even get real grocery bags.

I'm always amazed when I get what looks like 20 plastic bags at the grocery store, 5 of which only have one item in them. My favorite is getting a dozen oranges alone in a plastic bag, especially since they are already in a bag themselves. But that's from a former minimum wage bag boy's perspective.

You are correct. My Grandfather and his brother owned the Liberty Cash store that is now High Point Grocery. They sold it back in the late 1950's, I believe.
