New polls show public opinion against Health Care DEform is increasing but dingy Harry plans to railroad this sham through anyway.

Fox News shows 57% against the democrat DEform bill with only 34% for (net 23% against).

The LIBERAL democrat news agency CNN shows 61% AGAINST WITH 36% supporting healthcare DEform (net 25% against).

Polls currently show that democrat senate candidates Reid, Dodd, Specter, Bennet, Lincoln, Gillibrand all trailing in their respective races. If they follow their leader Mr. Reid they'll be out of work in about a year. 02-13-banana
No offense, but do the Republicans really care what the public wants?

Neither major party cares about anything but gaining more power and lining their pockets.

Ah yes. Nothing but the truth. The more people we can get to understand this reality, the better chance we have for survival.
BGSU, I think you've hit on the sad reality. Neither party really cares about what the people want.

I would think that either party could recast itself to listen to the people and address their concerns, and in so doing put itself in a dynastic position for a while.

Republicans sorta tried that with Newt's contract, and it worked for a while, until they forgot to do what it was that people elected them to do.

Liberals want to change things, so they are always looking for problems. As soon as they find one, they say, "We've found a problem and here's how we will expand government to solve it."
Conservatives are more interested in what will work and what won't work, and they know that the libearl solutions won't work, but they're trying to maintain the status quo, so they pretend there are no problems.

What we need is someone who says, "Here is a real problem, and this is a solution that will actually make things better." We don't have that.
Here, the Democrats (and Republicans in response) are being lambasted for not caring what the people want. A more (or at least equally so) common criticism of politicians, however, is that they only care what the people want, that they have no principles and bend too easily to the whims of the latest opinion poll. Which is the greater sin seems to be more a function of the opinion of the speaker rather than anything intrinsic to the situation.

How a legislator should decide his vote is an interesting question, and I'm not sure there is an easy answer. Is he elected to lead or to follow? Is he expected to vote his conscience or in accordance with the will of the majority of his constiuents (or conversely the nation)? Does it depend on the issue - should he lead when he can but follow when he must (and is this any different than those who will say or do anything to stay in power)?

I tend to side with the view that they are elected to lead, not follow. Opinion polls be damned, it is their responsibility to do what they believe is best for their constituents, regardless of the effect on their own political future (of course, this probably wouldn't lead to many being re-elected). This doesn't mean that the public can be ignored completely. As Owl69/70/75 said, they must be listened to in order to identify the problems - just not the solutions.

And no, I don't believe there are many such leaders around today. With the amount of money, power, & prestige available to modern politicians it is unlikely there will ever be again.

That tends to happen when you get appointed to seemly life time positions like Pelosi, Boxer, Reid and T Kennedy did. Want to change things? Then vote out the career politicians.
