Not much substance just a blurb.
Not a surprise.
Word is that Weis will be fired and Bob Stoops will be the next coach at ND. I've heard this from some very reliable sources. I wouldn't believe it myself if it were not from these two sources. I'm hearing Stoops will be named Wednesday or Thursday.
Then call him Bob Stoopid, unless he obtained a whispered agreement to go back to Holtz-era admission standards.

Knowing how badly ND wants to be back on top, that could be part of the deal.

Quite a story. I've certainly been impressed w/ Stoops, especially as someone who hates UO. But, they've taken a step back w/ his brother leaving.

I still think Patterson is a better choice. And you could argue for Kelly as much as Stoops, although I bet Stoops recruits better in regions that ND is interested in (TX, OK).

So the guy gets a job he wants, gets paid somewhere in the realm of $3 million (best guess based on what I've read), which is more than i make in five years, gets a boat-load of national attention and the worst thing that can happen to him is he fails and comes out obscenely rich and he's stoopid? I should be so stupid.
Outstanding!! A move sure to keep ND on the outskirts of the national title picture for several more years. Life is indeed good!

If it makes you feel any better, I think you're even MORE stupid than that. Way more. Your stupidity reaches new heights, IMO.
Don't ever feel your stupidity is lacking. :)

Stoops is already the second-highest paid coach in the country at (about) $3.5M a year What can Notre Dame offer him that he doesn't already have? He's built a national powerhouse, has a fertile recruiting pipeline in Texas and is worshipped like a god in Oklahoma. He's going to leave that for MAYBE an extra million a year just so he can try to recruit kids to play in one of the most g-dawful places in the country and become a human pinata for a bunch of fickle subway Domer fans if they don't win 10 games every year?

Yeah, I'd be shocked if Stoops was going anywhere. ND fans vastly overrate the allure of coaching at ND these days.
Like I said, I wouldn't believe Stoops to ND if I didn't know the sources so well. The one source also told me that if something would fall through with Stoops, that Brian Kelly is their #2 choice and they would go after him hard. He still expects Stoops to be the coach though, unless something earth shattering happens.

I've also heard that an email went out to students at ND this afternoon saying that Weis would not be retained for next season, so apparently he has already been fired as Karl's link stated.
ESPN source: ND staff told Weis is out

Pat Forde is talking up Kelly already.
Stoops to ND would be a shocker. The only thing that even makes this possible is that he knows that Sooner fans expected better this year. They are paying for BCS Bowl appearance money. One more year, not at that level, and the seat gets a little hot for the third year out. ND would restart the clock for him, giving him 5 years if he can reach 8-4 pretty early. OU is probably a better overall job.

Well either you have been lied too or Stoops is lying to the country.

Stoops staying at OK

There you have it. Football coaches never lie.
I would take Patterson then Kelly then Stoops.
The Weis fired part is true. The text of the message to ND Alumni follows, for anyone interested.

Quote:Weis will not be retained as Notre Dame football coach

University of Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis will not be retained, University director of athletics Jack Swarbrick announced today.

“We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations,” Swarbrick said. “As an alumnus, Charlie understands those goals and expectations better than most, and he’s as disappointed as anyone that we have not achieved the desired results.”

Swarbrick recommended the dismissal Sunday night to Notre Dame’s president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.

“We have established an evaluation process for all of our athletic programs that, in the end, results in a recommendation from Jack to me,” Father Jenkins said. “I accepted Jack’s decision and look forward to working with him on selecting a new head football coach who is the very best choice possible for the University and especially for our student-athletes.

“I am most appreciative to Coach Weis for his service to Notre Dame and our community. He and his family have my prayers and best wishes.”

Weis spent five seasons as Irish head coach from 2005-09, with his teams achieving consecutive records of 9-3 (Fiesta Bowl appearance) in ’05, 10-3 (Sugar Bowl appearance), 3-9, 7-6 (Hawai’i Bowl victory) and 6-6 in ’09 – for an overall 35-27 mark (.564).

Swarbrick announced that Rob Ianello, the Irish assistant head coach/offense, wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, will assume responsibility for football operations until a new coach is hired. Ianello has spent the past five seasons on the Notre Dame staff and previously was part of football staffs at Wisconsin (1990-93, 2003-04), Arizona (1994-2002) and Alabama (1987-89).
Stoops grew up in a very Catholic family in the Youngstown area. It would not be a shock for him to head to ND. FWIW, my mother-in-law and Stoop's mom are very good friends, and she would like to see him in South Bend.
I really think that Bryan Kelly is the man. If not, a clean hire would be Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern. I was really impressed watching his team this year. They really play well.
I'm now hearing that ND and Stoops are not agreeing on a salary and it could cause the deal to fall through. If it does, expect ND to go after Brian Kelly very hard.
