Just got back less than an hour ago... Figured I'd post my little trip log:

Great weather Saturday morning. Got off before noon which was too early.

Very peaceful drive with some surprises:
-Did I know and just forget that we have a Nuclear Power station near Sumiton/West Jefferson? If I did, I guess I forgot (ahh to be 40...) ... Kinda cool. When I lived in Germany for 2 years in the Army we used to run PT on a hill overlooking a valley with a twin tower station like it. You can predict the weather with those things. I'd always know what the 2 day forecast would be based upon whether the steam was blowing south (cool Scandinavian air) or north (uh oh... rain and clouds and warm air from the Med...). I saw this because this is the first time I have been on HWY 78 Corridor X since they extended it down to Graysville. This is a very very good thing. Last time I took it it didn't start till Jasper.
-HWY 9 in MS past Tupelo proved to be a great route to take to Oxford. It was a fast little 2 lane that joined HWY 6 when it was already 4 lane. Had no problems getting into Oxford and parked right off Coliseum Drive exit so easy off/easy on.

Vaught-Hemmingway has to be one of the nicest College Stadiums I have ever set foot in. So jealous...

What interactions I had with their fans, which wasn't much, were positive.

OK, someone explain to me:

"ARE YOU READY!?"

"HELL YEAH... Hotty Toddy :::mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, mumble, yeah!"

What are the words to their little thingy? I listened to the fans closest to us and it honest to God sounded like they mumbled everything past "hotty toddy"....

The team was a disappointment. They were not ready to play the game of football. The game was actually, dare I say, boring... After a couple of blown opportunities early (you know what they were), we pretty much didn't threaten. The whole tone was set by the unspecial teams completely failing to engage a gear on the opening kickoff of the game.

The drive to Tunica was easy peasy with a jump back on 6 and zip zip to Hwy 55. The new I-69 was there just like MB said it would be and very easy hop over to the Casinos. The Fitz wasn't anything special but did have a nice indoor pool. The prix fixe dinner at Twain's in Sam's Town was awesome!

Didn't lose much money, but didn't gamble much. Was up $40 at 3-6 holdem at Sam's until I got bored and started wanting to see flops with stupid hole cards.

Weather was beautiful in the Mississippi Valley yesterday. Learned on local Memphis TV News that the cotton crops are about 50% blown due to the monsoon like rain we have all been suffering lately.

That's about it.

Our team shows up looking like that against Marshall and we will not have a chance for the East Crown this year. They better get it together....
What you saw was the Miller Steam Plant, a coal-fired electric generating plant, owned by Southern Company.

Thanks for the link.

OMG they look precisely like Nuke Cooling towers don't they? 03-lmfao

We passed over a bridge over a rail track nearby. Below were numerous cars filled with coal. I told my wife it was quite ironic that so much coal was going by a "nuclear" power plant...
As you noted, the cooling towers for coal-fired plants are very similar in appearance to those of nuclear plants. Alabama has two nuclear plants that I know of. One is the Brown's Ferry Plant built by TVA between Florence and Decatur on the TN River, and one built by Southern Services in south-east Alabama whose name escapes me, but I don't think it was ever brought on line. There has been occasional talk of renovating it and putting it into service, but so far nothing has happened.

Your report on the game was very similar to what it sounded like on radio during the first half. I don't know if it was the play calling or the execution, but we certainly fizzeled in the Red Zone early in the game. Had we been able to take advantage of our breaks early on, we would have seen a vastly different game in Oxford. Once you lose momentum to a better team, they can really "put the wood" to you. I continue to wonder what has happened in Joe webb's head to make him such a tentative passer since the Rice game. Did the SMU & Troy games really "get into his head" that badly? he has not been the same since. Add in our neglected running game and you have what we have.

There is also one, be it inactive, just south of Scottsboro right on the TN River.

Joseph M. Farley. Shut down briefly a few years ago but operating again. Rumors that it leaks have been around for decades.

The construction was never finished. I expect that they will build a modern plant here utilizing the existing towers.

Thanks.

So it does have words. 03-lmfao

They should enunciate better. Perhaps the alcohol has something to do with it...

Bellefonte is the name of the yet to be completed plant near Scottsboro.

The one across the river from Decatur is Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant or B.F.N.P., "Big Fire No Power" as it was known for 15 years or so until it was completed.

That's stupid. It's like they tried to fit in a bunch of curse words instead of making sense.

Georgia Tech owns the fight song war. It includes the four cornerstones of my life: drinking, gambling, swearing, and engineering.

Quote:I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an Engineer
A Helluva, Helluva, Helluva, Helluva, Helluva Engineer
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear.
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an Engineer

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in white and gold,
And put her on the campus To cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I'll tell you what he'd do--
He'd yell: 'TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!' Like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum, and Sugar three thousand pounds
A college bell to put it in, And a clapper to stir it round.
I'd drink to all the good fellows, who come from far and near.
I'm a Ramblin', Gamblin', HELL OF AN ENGINEER!

That is the most retarded thing I have heard in a while. My uncle works at Farley quite a bit, and he hasn't grown a third arm yet. If there were any problems the NRC would be going apesh*t.
Nuclear power is frightening. In a country where a substantial number believe in birtherism and UFOs, it would be shocking if there *wasn't* someone running around terrified of a new Chernobyl.
