Memphis, Alabama-Birmingham look to stay unbeaten in C-USA
UAB (14-3) at No. 3 Memphis (17-2) 8:00 pm EST
MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- While Memphis is off to its best start in 20 years and ranked among the nation's best, it still is looking up at a pair of teams in its own conference.
One of those teams visits FedEx Forum on Thursday when Alabama-Birmingham faces the third-ranked Tigers in a Conference USA matchup.
Memphis has won six straight overall and is 3-0 in C-USA play, but stares up at UAB and UTEP, both of whom are 4-0 in the league standings.
However, the Tigers have barely been challenged in the conference, winning all three games by double figures and the last two by an average of 18.5 points.
Darius Washington Jr. led four players in double figures with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting in Saturday's 85-68 victory over Southern Miss. Washington had just one turnover in 32 minutes and scored 11 points in the final eight minutes to help seal the win.
Joey Dorsey had just seven points but was 3-of-4 from the floor and is 22-of-25 (88 percent) in his last six games.
The Blazers own the nation's longest winning streak at 10 games after Saturday's 82-79 triumph over Houston. The run is three shy of matching the school's longest, established in the 1991-92 season, and has them entering Thursday with eight consecutive wins in the league dating to last season.
Wen Mukubo scored 16 points and freshman Lawrence Kinnard added 13, including three key baskets down the stretch, in the win over Houston.
Memphis leads the all-time series, 20-9, but UAB won last season's meeting, 73-70.
