For What It’s Worth: Big East on the way out of Providence?

The Big East office moving out of Providence?

Don’t be shocked.

The lease is up next spring on their Richmond Street office, and the word is that the Big East is having difficulty finding new quarters in Rhode Island, both with price and the perception that the conference is a cash cow and must have unlimited pockets.

All this in the context of the conference presidents suggesting a year ago that the office move out of Rhode Island, which has been home based since Dave Gavitt founded the league in the late ’70s. Conference officials already have checked out sites in New York, Tampa, and Hartford as possible relocations.

Bottom line?

The Big East could be out of Rhode Island.

Say it ain’t so, Looie Carnesecca.

It needs to be in NYC, bottom line.
A-10 recently moved their HQ from Philly to Newport News, VA. About a year after a new commissioner, one who previously worked for the ACC, took over.
My hunch is that the Big East office ends up in Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, or Hartford.

I know USF is in Tampa, but that just seems like an odd place to have the conference offices given how many NE teams the conference has.
As long as Providence people are running the show the BE Headquarters is not going anywhwere.

I think Tampa would be the worst possible location for The BEast office. It should be around the metro NYC area, if at all possible...

If price is an obstacle, put it in West Virginia. King Joe'll give y'all a good deal for puttin' the BEast offices in the Mountain State... 05-stirthepot

Nice weather, no state income tax. Wouldnt be a bad choice.
It'll be Woonsocket. Or Warwick.
I agree, NYC is where it should be...

South Bergen-North Hudson Waterfront, New Haven, Stamford, Bridgeport, Morristown, White Plains should all be considered as well. I'd prefer it to be in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, or the Bergen-Hudson Waterfront.
New York please....
New York just makes too much sense. Even if the league splits, New York is still a central location to several if not most of its members. I'm sure there's also plenty of commercial real estate to go around, especially with all of the WTC-related building.

If you want a central location, considering all BEast members in basketball and football, Pittsburgh is the place. However, a NYC address gives the conference more pizzaz, and puts us on the biggest stage...
NYC in money making Manhattan. They need easy access to Wall Street and Madison Avenue. And they need to buy some suits. Now we have a conference.

And our first financial/hooker scandal can't be too far behind. BOoya.

But seriously, they need to be in NYC with the mayor putting so much influence behind the Yankee Bowl. And New Yorkers need to feel like the BE is our conference. NYC will change the culture of the front office. They will see more deals then they would see in Providence.
I do think NYC is the best place for our league
NYC please. East Hartford won't be so bad. It is close enough to NYC and next to ESPN.
If they are moving out of Providence because the costs are too high, I doubt Manhattan is where they wind up. 03-wink

Cheers,
Neil

I agree, Neil. NYC would be a great place to be. But it's also the most expensive...

Not to mention the cost is a lot lower in Tampa. Don't be shocked if it ends up in Tampa.
