I'm asking because I think there's a great shot you all have and I just don't know any better. Please let me know if your team has/hasn't - even if the win was yesterday or 30 years ago.

Doing a little research. UCF never has, so I'm not here to talk smack!

Thanks!

Ohio has never beaten a top 25.

We came closest in 2003, taking a top 20 NIU team into overtime.

Also, Ohio beat Pitt the week after they lost their top 25 ranking in 2005 following their opening week loss at Notre Dame.

Last year Ohio led #3 ranked OSU in the 4th quarter which was our best performance ever against a top 10 team.
10/6/90 NIU over #24 Fresno State 73-18 (HOME)
11/9/02 NIU over #20 Bowling Green 26-17 (HOME)
8/28/03 NIU over #15 Maryland 20-13 (HOME)
9/20/03 NIU over #21 Alabama 19-16 (AWAY)
Buffalo beat #12 Ball State in the MAC Championship game in 2008... it was their first victory over a ranked team

Toledo beat an unranked Purdue team 36-22 at the beginning of the '97 season. The Boilermakers went on to finish the season as #15 in both polls.
Zips beat a #25 Marshall team in 2003.

Damn Muncie Jinx!!!

That 1997 game really sucked. Toledo was 8-0, ranked #18 and scoring a lot of points (including a 36-22 win over a good Purdue team that finished ranked in the Top 20) before going to Muncie and getting are arses handed to us. It changed the whole season. We finished the season with losses in 3 of our last 4 games, starting with that Ball State game......including a 34-14 loss to Marshall in the MAC Championship. We went 9-3 that year.

Ball State and Toledo have had a very interesting history. They have played 34 times, with the Cardinals winning 17, the Rockets 16, and there has been 1 tie. Interestingly, only 14 of the 36 games have been decided by 10 or fewer points. In the first 10 games of the series, each team won 5 times. In the second 10 games Ball State won 5, Toledo 4, and there was 1 tie. The third decade saw Toledo win 6 and Ball State 4. Now into the 4th decade, Ball State has won 3 and Toledo 1. That is just about as much parity as is possible.

As for the Muncie jinx, that is a fairly recent phenomenon. Overall, Ball State has won 11 and lost 6 at home. But the Cardinals have won 6 of the past 8 games played in Muncie. The "jinx" effect is magnified by the fact that 2 of those 6 wins were huge upsets when Toledo was ranked in the top 25. Before that, the Cards held only a slim 5-4 advantage on the home turf.

Toledo will likely go to Muncie next week as a heavy favorite. Will they prevail? It's anyone's guess, but I would never bet anything I couldn't afford to lose on any Rocket-Cardinal game, especially one played in Muncie. This series is too unpredictable. And that's what makes it so interesting.

Yeah, like all good jinxes......the Muncie jinx has some requirements. First, Toledo must be favored to win the game. Second, Toledo must be either ranked or favored by at least 20 points if not ranked. Third, Toledo must go into the game with a positive turnover margin and very little penalties. This third requirement is huge, because when we turn the ball over 6 times and get called for 15 penalties it is really shocking to the entire UT fanbase.....except those ex-players that experienced the jinx first hand.

One ex-UT player who has frequented the boards has a total hatred for UT playing at Ball State. Not only did his UT team get beat soundly in a game that UT was a heavy favorite, he blew out his knee in the game.

The jinx is more recent though, starting in the mid 90's. UT would blow out Ball State at home, and the next year get blown out at Ball State. Of course with our pour record the last three years, we haven't beat them in Muncie, nor at home.
Hey, rocketfootball, you don't have a bum knee, do you?

In addition to those wins, we twice beat BG in 2003 when they were a top 20 team.
