From ABC 33/40

Birmingham - Thursday, Alabama's largest employer turns 40- years old. It was September 24, 1969 when a declaration made the University of Alabama in Birmingham an independent school. Then, the campus was only 15 blocks. Now, it's grown to more 80 blocks. And the student body has tripled to more than 17,000. The UAB Archives Department is taking a special look back. Tim Pennycuff, a UAB Archivist says the department has over 50,000 images, so it's kind of hard to pick your best. He also says it is fascinating because it does show how things have changed in the 40 years since we became an independent school. We've added a link to archived UAB photos in the Newslink section.

Cool UAB archives with historic photos found here:

There's a lot of history & growth to be proud of, Blazer fans!!
I should have mentioned sooner, but last week, on FOX 6, Janet Hall did the evolution of the UAB mascot on her "Birmingham: Then and Now" series.

It was cool, though the pink Cookie Monster-thing was truly creepy.
Happy Birthday UAB, here's to many many more.

At this rate of growth, how long until UAB takes over the county? the metro area? the state? Come on mathematicians.

the pic at the bottom shows just how much we've grown in the 40 years.
forty is the new thirty, so we are still in our prime! 02-13-banana
Somebody needs to go to one of the overpasses on I-65 as you enter Birmingham and hang a sign that says Lordy Lordy UAB's 40!

Plus 1! That would be great. I could just hear the traffic reports while somebody was hanging the sign up!
Little know Birmingham (UAB) fact from UAB Archives:

Quote:March 30, 1942: The 10th and 11th floors of Jefferson Hospital became home to the secret national headquarters of the US Army’s Replacement and School Command (R&SC), which was charged with individual training of officers and enlisted personnel of the infantry, field artillery, cavalry, coast artillery, armored forces, parachute and tank destroyer units. The operation was moved from Washington, DC and was activated in Birmingham on this date. The R&SC remained in Jefferson Hospital until it was moved to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina in April of 1944.
Have any of you ever seen the first ever UAB annual? I can't immediately remember the name of the book (I remember not particularly liking it), but it had pictures of UAB's first faculty and some of its early physical appearance.
I share a birthday with UAB...how cool is that?
Quote:June 26, 1986: The University of Alabama Board of Trustees approved the UAB Injury Control Research Center with Dr. P. Russ Fine as first director.

That's not the nut that used to be on the radio with his wife, is it?

It is. He's still on the faculty in the School of Medicine.

Happy birthday! GB!
I wonder if this contract is still active and valid:

Quote:December 20, 1944: The University of Alabama entered into a 99-year contract with Jefferson County for the use of Jefferson and Hillman Hospitals. It also conveyed to the university the land on which the hospitals were located.
Two more gems that show just how far UAB has come:

Quote:1945: Research grants at the Medical College of Alabama totaled $8,900.

1945: Tuition for the Medical College of Alabama was $400 per scholastic year.
check out uab's new web site
Lord, that Web site update is so overdue.
The new website looks good. They did a great job with the picture on the virtual campus tour.
