very well, I have this sick feeling in my stomach that it will be at least 1,000 Tigers fans at the game in Birmingham when Memphis comes in.

What do you guys think?

You can bank on it being more than that.

lmfao Good point. They use the Louisville math to determine how many people they bring.... lmfao I think they are up to about 15K from their last visit..... 02-13-banana
Well according to the ticket office, UAB fans should be prepared to be upset.

A rep from the ticket said one Memphis fan just yesterday ordered 250 reserve seats for the game. And the rep said more Memphis people have bought tickets than UAB folks and said don't be surprised if there are more Tigers fans at the game then Blazer fans.

This is one reason why I wouldn't be surprised if Mike left UAB. Birmingham preferred to wait until the day of the game to buy tickets. It would be a travesty if the above happens.

This is one reason why I wouldn't be surprised if Mike ever left UAB. Birmingham preferred to wait until the day of the game to by tickets. It would be a travesty if the above happens.

This is why you give people associated with Birmingham and UAB the chance to buy tickets before you sell to just anyone. When you have a well known team coming to birmingham then you can bank on a sell-out. We should have given UM their allotted tickets and be done with it. If what you say is true about Memphis out buying us in tickets and UAB shuts out the students like they did for Louisville two years ago, then I will be extremely pissed. Students have already paid for all of their tickets in fees and any student wishing to see the game should be allowed to do so.

GO BLAZERS!! 04-rock
Birmingham and UAB people has had an ample opportunity to buy tickets. Season tickets, flex packs, you name it and we had the opportunity to do so.

This city is just a notorious walk-up on the event night ticket purchasers.
I have been formulating a letter to the Birmingham News readers basically wanting to call everyone out for not attending the games. OSU should have been a sellout. VCU should of had a crowd of 6000+. If there were actually 4300 people in the building last night, I will kiss your :domokun: .

More like 2850 if you asked me. I don't think we could have filled the lower bowl.

We are going to lose Coach Anderson to as program that is better supported if we cannot get more people to show up.

Any thoughts on the raising attendance to put in my letter? Should we make this a letter writing campaign, say where the news gets about 10-15 a day for the next week?
I'm not that worried about. Even if 1,000 Memphis fans come (which I doubt), Bartow still seats 8,500. That's 7,500 UAB fans right there if only 1,000 Memphis folks come... and what's more, this will be an above-capacity crowd. We're talking probably closer to 9,500 than 8,500.

No matter how you slice it, it will still be a home-court advantage. Will it be as much as we would have liked? Maybe not, but Memphis fans probably started buying tickets to that game after nearly knocking off #1 Duke earlier this year (if not before that). UAB didnt have that type of early-season excitement to get people buying tickets 2 months in advance. Birmingham is a large walk-up crowd type of place... and unfortunately, they may have to learn a lesson with this game. The students will show up in force for this game...and it's likely that many, many will have to be turned away.

This game will have a tremendous atmosphere... I suspect something on the level of Louisville 2004 or Cincinnati 2003 in terms of excitement in the air. Memphis will bring folks (and in large numbers), but it will still most definitely be a home-court advantage for us... and that's our primary goal.

Having said all that... I'm going to buy 2 more tickets today or tomorrow, so that's 2 more UAB fans. I would encourage others of you to buy extra tickets if you can as well. Give them to friends or family or people that you at least KNOW wont be supporting Memphis.
games are generally on Wednesday. I am a die-hard, Season Ticket Holder... and one of the things I put before UAB basketball is my commitment to God. There a many of us who would have gone to the game last night, had it not been a Church Night. I altered Bible Study once this year to take the Youth, but that is not something you can do on a regular basis and maintain a clear conscience about it. I wish our games which are not scheduled for TV purposes would be on a night other than Wednesday.
What is the limit on the number of students that they will take before they turn them away? I plan on firing up my iPod video and getting in line at least 2 hours before game-time.

They normally limit it to the amount of seats at the visiting end. I really think it all depends. if you get there two hours before the doors open then you should be fine.

I agree with ICB. Attendance would have been higher had the game been on another night than wednesday. There were a lot of empty seats in the Green and Gold Room Area. Remember, all of those seats are held by season ticket holders they pay a good amount to UAB for those seats.
If you have season tickets and cannot make a Wednesday night game, then why not pass along your tickets to someone with a little less devotion? 03-idea
If students want to be there for the Memphis game, it might be another good time for an Anderson Alley Campout. With the out-of -town pressures on the tickets, that might be the only way they can get guaranteed seating.
Memphis will have well over 1000 if they keep winning which they probably will considering CUSA competition. This will be the most they have ever brought to Bartow.

Why?
1. Game is at the end of the season as March madness is heating up.
2. They don't have to travel for the conference tournament, so more will be willing to travel to Bham.
3. We are their biggest competition this year.
4. We are their closest conference opponent.
5. Birmingham as stated don't think in advance. They will get excited about the game around three days before it starts.
6. This game will possibly decide who wins the regular season championship.

I don't buy the Wednesday night argument. While it may affect some, some of our biggest crowds in the History of Bartow arena have been on Wednesday nights. Cincinnati was one of them. I attend one of the largest churches in the country in Memphis, and it isnt that crowded on Wednesdays. I suspect Birmingham is no different.

Anyone with any sense should know that for a game of this magnitude, you cannot expect to rely on a general admission seat. Buy a reserved seat.

There shouldn't be pressure on the students. Anderson Alley is great for the best seats, but any student that wants to come should be able to until both ends of the stadium are full of students.

This has added meaning if UAB is purposely selling to Memphis fans. Students should have the first right to seating :irate:
UAB Basketball as a solid fanbase of about 4,000. They will come to a game regardless of opponent or night.

Then you have the "only attend a game if the opponent is such and such program" folks and to me they are not true supporters of the program.

UAB Basketball is a viable and proven product that the City of Birmingham, students and employees at UAB could care less about.

And even that may be overly optimistic. For 6 of UAB's 9 home games the crowd (reported on UABsports.ocsn.com) was less than 4,000.

S.C. St. attendance 3,487
W.K.U. attendance 3,835
Alcorn St. attendance 3,676
Centenary attendance 3,080
O.D.U. attendance 4,588
Okla. St. attendance 8,289
V.C.U. attendance 3,879
V.S.U.* attendance 3,976
Tulsa attendance 4,388

*Division II opponent

It appears that the fans who will come "regardless of opponent or night" is about 3,000 (see Centenary).

Probably enough of the curious and Memphis fans will show up to cause the Memphis game to be a sell-out. I still think Houston should be a sell-out, but they don't seem to be playing as well as they appeared to be for awhile.

Average attendance is down thus far after the Christmas break as well, although only two games have been played and the anomalous Okie State attendance skews the average.
I gotta say, those numbers are depressing.
The numbers at Alabama and Auburn are depressing, too.
It's a shame there aren't more people in Alabama who care about basketball.
I am sick and tired of the crybabies on this board that keep saying you can't be a true fan of UAB if you don't attend the games. I will argue that every school in the country (including Alabama and Auburn) have tons of fans and supporters who don't bother to go to the games. You have no right to tell someone that they are not a fan just because they have better things to do with their time than go to every game. If your life is so empy and meaningless that you suffer psychological damage if you miss a UAB home game in football or basketball, then I just feel sorry for you. Personally, I am a big fan of UAB. At this time, I just don't feel like going to many games. That doesn't mean I don't support the program or I am not a fan regardless of what the crybabies on this board have to say about it.
